That's a great question .. but what if you are around alcoholics 24/7? It's hard to say no and not join in on the fun .. Some do cocaine, but I would never participate in that. It's hard to not take a drink.
MUSIC BABY! Listen to music, sing music. WRITE MUSIC. Let yourself become completely immersed in the sounds, the beats, the lyrics. Let yourself start that beautiful cathardic push away from the drugs and alcohol that is consuming your mind otherwise. I'm an addict. Right now its music that is keeping me clean. I picked a song that is my "Sobriety Anthem" last time i was working on getting sober (9 years ago) Coheed and Cambria's In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3 was the song I would listen to and jam out to when I was really feeling myself crave and the urges hit and I felt alone and all i could focus on was the drugs. This time around (yup...i relapsed.) Its Eminem's Not Afraid.
Find a song that will give you strength and listen to it.
If you need an outlet for your own feelings and you can't find something to listen to that will make you feel strong and secure- write your own song. It works.
Right on! I play bass and got some new jazz picks; haven't used a pick in twenty years. It really fights the cravings to jam out some tunes I haven't played in years; can't remember them if drunk! I was cranking out some "Money" and it sounded awesome! Seriously, playing while drunk just makes one a crappy musician.
