Internet and Video Game addiction
Hello, I'm not really sure where my post should belong since I have an addiction to video games, particularly online video games. I've been playing video games since I was five years old and I progressed to online video games at age eleven. Since I was a child, I was always shy and lonely because I wasn't one to reach out and make friends. I was introduced to video games by my family and it became a whole new experience. Video games were my friend in that sense and today I see it as way to fill the void of loneliness.
Until I started college, I use to play video games online or single-player all day long, sometimes neglecting homework and family life. Since I started college at age 18, I started to realize how much video games and the internet affected me in the real world. Even before college, I have anger spells (temper tantrums (as a child), arguments with my mom (teenager - now), outbursts of anger (now), crying fits) that I'm realizing was contributed by my unhealthy hours on video games, console or computer. Maybe, something else too.
Another thing is, I tend to daydream and create imaginary friends to keep me company if I'm not playing video games. My mind countlessly wonders about the games i've played and use daydreaming or imaginary friends to quiet my mind from thinking about the guilty pleasure.
Video games are enjoyable and I still play them, but I need to find a way to quiet my urge and better ways to cope. I'm reaching out for help and community not only for myself, but for the sake of my family, boyfriend and professional life once I leave college.
