Nail Biting

Hello everyone,

I've had a strong nail biting habit for as long as I can remember. As a child my dad even offered to give me extra pocket money if I could stop biting, but it never worked. And now with having anxiety, I do it even more! I really need to stop as having nicer looking nails would be one less thing to be anxious about! Any advice?

@emperorstevee Hi there, thanks for reaching out and welcome to our community. Nail biting can certainly be a tough one and is something I've struggled with since I was a kid as well. I don't have much personal advice to offer unfortunately but here are some links that are hopefully helpful.

@emperorstevee I've always had problems with biting my nails too, especially when anxious, so I can relate.

@emperorstevee The only solution that worked for me was wearing black nail polish, and even that tended to only work temporarily; however if you're trying to stop it might be something that could help you with breaking the habit. I'm not sure how comfortable you'd be wearing nail polish? You could try a clear ones so people can't tell you're wearing it as easily, but personally having it be black worked far better for me. If you are a Goth or punk, then wearing black nail polish probably wouldn't be much of a problem since it goes with the aesthetic. laugh

Another things I notice is that when I've been on anti-anxiety medications that I don't bite my nails. Although that's not a good /healthy option, it does make me wonder if getting some kind of treatment or councelling for anxiety might help, since that is often the underlying cause.

My nail biting has actually got so bad it's started to damage my teeth. frown If I was so scare, I'd go to a dentist, but I haven't yet. I don't think most people realise how serious a health issue it can become.

Habitica has a guild for people who struggle with Body-Focused Repetitive Behavior disorder (BFRB for short). Some common BFRBs are: Hair-pulling (trichotillomania), Skin-picking (dermatillomania/excoriation disorder), Nail-biting (onychophagia), Mouth-chewing and lip-biting, Compulsive joint-cracking, Compulsive nose-picking. The guild contains a lot of really helpful information, as well as supportive challanges that can join as well.

If anyone here is interested, here is the link to the guild: https://habitica.com/groups/guild/d8c7259a-eabc-458a-86bb-672dad7516b8

I've actually just joined it myself in order to try and work finding alternatives to help me to stop my skin-picking and nail-biting, and I thought I'd share this resorce here with you guys as well.

@emperorstevee out of all the coping mechanisms. Bitting your nails, isn't all that bad. I think it's kinda cute, like people *** their thumbs. If it helps you then that's all that matters ❤❤❤

Hi!

I’m sorry that you have this problem. I’m also biting my nails and I still fighting with it. I don’t have a magic solution for this but I have few things that works for me a little. I need to clip my nails short but I can’t have any manicure tool near me because instead of biting I would groom them too much. Nail polish is also good but it works for me only for one day and I’m too lazy to do it every day sooo… I’m not doing this but maybe for you I will be a good idea for try
