“While taking breaks from social media is great, it’s important to be realistic (and not militant) about your use. If social media is a part of your life, that’s OK. There are ways to lessen the negative effects and enhance the positive effects of social media, even while you’re using it.

For instance, you can:

  • Unfollow accounts that have a negative effect on your mood or self-image.

  • Remove photos from your own profile that trigger self-judgment.

  • Delete any negative DMs, trolling, or spam.

  • Unsave posts that encourage you to compare yourself to others.

On top of that, you can set an example for mindful, authentic posting, so others can be inspired by your feed and perhaps follow suit.

For starters, you can:

  • Skip the filter and showcase the real you.

  • Post photos of the “messy” moments, not just the perfect ones.

  • Remind others in your captions that you’re a real person with flaws, hang-ups, and insecurities — just like them.

  • Post encouraging comments on others’ posts.

  • Post about taking breaks when you take them to remind others they can do the same.”

My Takeaways:

  • Do you find yourself consumed by social media? As nowadays seemingly everyone has instant access to the internet, there seems no shortage of content and videos to consume at the tips of our fingertips. This can bring about negative consequences.

  • Taking a social media break may be much harder than it sounds. Personally, I start experiencing excessive boredom when not using social media for a bit. However there are some activities that help that the article mentions such as going for a walk, reading a book, painting, etc. Finding that non-internet based alternative can be a step to wean off usage.

  • Additionally when using social media there are healthy ways to consume it as well. Avoiding toxic environments can help your mental health, additionally being more realistic on your social media platforms can help dispel the need to show an “ideal image” of yourself constantly.

Hi there, I completely agree with you that taking breaks from social media can be challenging, and it's important to find a healthy balance. I appreciate the tips you mentioned for consuming social media positively, such as unfollowing negative accounts, deleting negative DMs, and posting encouraging comments.

In addition to those, I also find it helpful to limit the amount of time I spend on social media each day and to be intentional about the type of content I consume. It's important to be mindful of how we feel while using social media and to take breaks when we start to feel overwhelmed or negative.

Overall, I believe it's all about finding what works best for you and being intentional about your social media use. Thanks for sharing these tips and bringing attention to the importance of taking care of our mental health while using social media!

You bring up a great point of being intentional about our social media use. Often times we consume media unintentionally and just breeze by content. I'd say being more intent with our usage can help us avoid overuse and also take care of our mental health! I recently downloaded a screen time tracker as to see how much time I really do spend per day on my phone.

@sunnyWriting4806 Thank you for your reply! I completely agree that being intentional about our social media use is so important. That's a great idea to download a screen time tracker to get a better sense of how much time we're spending on our phones each day. It can be eye-opening to see the numbers!
