Service to others helps me when I need to change my thought patterns. Instead of focusing on myself I reach for the phone and text someone to check in on them and ask them how their day went, or I jump on 7 cups and do some volunteer time as a listener. :)

Volunteering my time here is for sure one of my greatest distractions. I also use music and cleaning at the same time. I find keeping my mind and hands busy keeps me from turning towards my addiction.

I'm a fan of the HALT method of self-care and self-awareness. It's an acronym that helps to remind us of what our basic needs are and how to take care of them to keep our minds sharp and our bodies healthy and therefore less vulnerable to triggers and relapses.

Here's what the acronym stands for...

H-Hungry

A-Angry

L-Lonely

T-Tired

Take a few moments a few times a day to check-in with yourself and ask "am I hungry, angry, lonely or tired?". If you answer yes to any of them, make sure to take the time to take care of yourself to remedy them. Here's a handy little infographic I have a sticker of on my bathroom mirror, fridge, daytimer, and front door.
