Hey everyone i don't know if this is the right forum. I am having this serious addiction towatds my mother for years. I tried to get rid of it many times but always failed. For last some years i was away from her so it was ok i was here far from her. But I am going back home soon and i don't know how to control myself from doing something stupid. Any help would be appreciated.

@echaey

I hear that you are worried about going home because you are worried that you might do something that you regret.

Do you know that the first step to changing a behaviour is to acknowledge the problem? The fact that you have shared about it, means that you are already taking steps to recognise it and thus do something about it.

Another thing that might be useful is something I was taught a long time ago - the more we try to stop a behaviour, normally the worse it gets. Thoughts particularly.  Trying to stop problematic thoughts just focuses our energy on them. One solution is to learn an incompatible alternative.

Unfortunately, this is learning that needs to be put in place before exposure to the trigger. There needs to be time for a new habit to develop. So this might be something to work on for future visits. A professional in learning new mental skills could be really helpful for that.

And remember that leaving is always an option. Leaving the room, leaving the house, leaving the locality. It might not be what you want to do, you might be worried about the consequences. But can any consequence be worse than not keeping yourself or someone else safe? Have the courage to leave, or not even go, if you can't guarantee safety.

Do the work first, and then confront the situation.
