Struggling to cope with past mistakes
In 2012, I made an investment in something nobody had seemed to have heard of—something called Bitcoin. I turned $1,000 into $10,000 and never looked back. Nowadays, Bitcoin is everywhere, and my original investment (100 BTC) would be worth over 10 million dollars. I can’t stop obsessing over the massive opportunity that I missed, and how I would’ve had financial stability for the rest of my life. Now, I’m going into debt for medical school. I had to move across the country and leave all of my friends behind, and I’m constantly stressed by the immense expectations on me and crippling fear about going into so much debt. I have been turning to substance abuse to try and cope with these feelings, but I need to get it under control or it is going to affect my career moving forward. How do I move on and stop obsessing over this missed opportunity?
The fact that you were able to make that initial investment and see the potential speaks to your ability to make smart decisions, even if things didn’t play out the way you hoped. Missing out on a massive financial opportunity like Bitcoin can feel like an impossible weight, especially when you're facing big financial and personal challenges now. But, obsessing over it doesn't change the past or your current reality. It’s tough to find ways to deal with all these intense emotions, but I hope you’re able to find some healthy outlets, whether it’s talking with a counselor, support groups, or figuring out strategies to handle the stress without turning to substances. Sometimes, reaching out for professional support for substance abuse can make a huge difference.
Thank you. My fiancée has been telling me I need to get counseling for a long time. I’m going to sign up for something this week and find some healthier outlets. I stopped most of my healthy habits when I moved across the country (smaller support structure, more responsibility). I think things are just coming to a head for me because of the added stresses and new debt, so I’m obsessing about things that I can’t change. I appreciate your insight.
