Readers,

When did you first notice your child was struggling? What did the support look like for you and your family? What kinds of decisions were you faced with?

Share your story.

My son was diagnosed with ADHD in the beginning of this year by the doctors. But I noticed symptoms when he was in his first year of pre-k. He has wonderful support from the school and he sees a social worker outside of school for home. He is 6 years old. I had it was I was younger and I had great help. I feel like I have grown out of mine to a point. I notice it a lot when I am doing more school work or when I haven't slept too good. But it is so frustrating. I wish I remembered what they did with me at home because I am so out of things to do with him. His main thing at home is that he doesn't listen. I have yelled, talked, tried outing him in the corner before but it didn't work. I am starting that again and it seems like it is working to a point. If anyone has any suggestions I am all up for them that's if I haven't tried it already.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. I also have a 6 year old son. My heart goes out to you. Are you familiar with ABA Therapy?

One thing that has worked really well with my son is empathetic parenting. It doesn't at all mean that you let them get away with stuff, but all of your discipline is based on being calm, understanding, and rational. My son is a little older (11), but I started doing this with him around age 8. What worked best for him was deciding ahead of time what the consequences would be, keeping them short, not threatening, and delivering them with lots of love and understanding. My son is extremely social, so rather than a time-out, he does extra chores with me instead. It helps him feel that he's making up for it and gives us a chance to talk/reconnect.

Very well put! I also believe in the power of positivie parenting. My son also responds well to this and feeling connected. He is 8 years old now. Anytime we can collaborate with our children as parents is a win. Thank you for your insight!
