Dealing with school...
Hi everyone! I thought it might be nice to if we all shared some coping mechanisms that we have used to stay focused at school. So please post some of your focusing tools here :)
Here are some of mine:
Take notes no matter what is going on in the class so I can stay on task.
Write down questions about the class on a list to the side of my notebook so I don't blurt them out in class.
Thanks everyone :)
To stay focussed and do well:
1. Highlight important information that is relevant to exams or assignments, draw a bright box around them or use a highlighter - that way when you come to revise, you have the most important facts ready, rather than having to re-read through everything.
2. Ensure you are aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and as stated above, write them down. That way, you will know when it comes to something important that you need to ask for help on certain things, rather than going over what you can already do.
3. Save the fun for break time. It may be short, but you can talk during the breaks rather than during class.
4. If you are feeling tired, keep writing everything that you hear, or ask if you can record the lesson, so you can listen back to it.
5. Don't give up on classes that you don't find interesting. You can still do well, even if it seems otherwise. Make sure you are aware.
6. Find your own way to remember things you learn. Some people learn better when they teach the material, or listen to certain points, or have flow diagrams of their notes. Find out what works best for you and use this when you are outside the classroom.
For the parent of a younger child with ADD/ADHD, it is a good idea to schedule a meeting with the teacher and the school counselor at the beginning of the year for a consultation.Ask for certain accommodations that may be helpful to your child. Many of these are listed below. Also, some things listed are strategies you can do at home to help your child.
1. Standing while working.
2. Doodling while listening.
3. Frequent opportunities to work with others.
4. Frequent movement breaks, i,e. take notes to the office
5. Quick brain exercises that utilizeboth hemispheres of the brain.
6. Learn and teach strategies for impulse control.
7. Outside time daily.
