How did you find out that you are ADHD?

I am asking because sometimes when I'm talking to a listener about this, I get asked how I know that I have ADHD.  I really wish I had a good easy answer to this question.  All I can do is tell my story about how when I was in school, I got diagnosed with a learning disability and had to go to special classes for it.  Then I got to tell them that I had to talk to a psychiatrist (I hate spelling this word)  and he seemed to determine that I had the ADD version of ADHD.  That is why I keep telling everyone that I have this.  Also I struggle with learning and figuring out things.  For example, I'm not getting any applications put in for a new job today, because I got bogged down by trying to figure out the websites, and I feel extremely overwhelmed by it, and anxious.  This is a common problem I have with doing lots of different tasks.  As soon as something gets me confused, my brain feels like shutting down.

I was tipped off about having ADHD when I read Gabor Maté's book ‘Scattered Minds’. I was first looking into ADHD because I thought that my daughter might have it based on some observations I was making about her schoolwork and study habits. Needless to say that book ended up explaining my whole life to me and putting things into context. I couldn’t believe the author had my tendencies pegged to the tee, turns out the author has ADHD too. I cant get an official diagnosis in the country we live in so I have had to depend on my own knowledge and implementation of various strategies to help both my daughter and I. So far things are going well and I am grateful for that.

I find the best way to diffuse a task that is overwhelming and causes brain shut down is to break that task up into smaller parts. Look at just one website and try your best to navigate it, even if that takes you a couple days to do. Once you have figured out that one site and applied, move on to the next one on your list and so forth. Hope this helps. 😊
