People Without ADHD Judging You
Have any of you ever had issues with people doubting (or at least they seem like theyre doubting) that you actually have ADHD (particularly, the inattentive type) and/or that you actually do need accommodations? Do you ever start to doubt your diagnosis if youre doing really well in school? And do you have any suggestions for how to deal with those?
I ask because when I did need accommodations for a time (I was having issues with my medication), it seemed like I was being judged and seen as lazy by those who knew my academic record (my grades had fallen because my ADHD was getting out of control and I was also very overwhelmed because of it, and also depressed at one point). Other than those years, Ive always done extremely well in STEM, and even when my grades were falling, I usually did pretty well on exams. Now that my ADHD is under control, Im starting to question the diagnosis (even though I know thats not logical). I didnt get diagnosed until later in life either, which can sometimes make me feel like a fraud. I know that it was because my long-term memory for ideas and concepts is pretty good, and thats what hid it. The only reason I even got diagnosed was because there were other issues going on.
That's really frustrating to feel like you are judged or viewed negatively for something that you just needed accommodations to manage. Especially since if it were a (visible) physical thing, people wouldn't act the same way, yes invisible struggles are every bit as real. Glad to hear that things are more under control with your ADHD and that you are thriving!
