Anxiety + Urgency

Personally when I’m feeling really anxious, a sense of urgency usually goes hand in hand. It also works the other way around though, my sense of urgency usually triggers my anxiety as well.

This has been my biggest anxiety related issues that I am still struggling to manage. I always feel the need to “rush”, especially when it comes to relationship anxiety. I always rush in trying to get the problem solved, sometimes resulting in me completely ignoring my boyfriend’s boundaries of needing some space because “I really just gotta let it all out right now”. Just wondering if anyone struggles with the same thing as I do?

@zeloyo Anxiety is tough to navigate, and you're certainly not alone in feeling that it directly impacts on your sense of urgency - it's actually a very well-known feedback loop where both make each other worse. I've linked a bit more about this mechanism below.

You've mentioned that it's having an effect on your relationship, which is always difficult to acknowledge but being aware of it, as you are, is a big step forward. One negative aspect of anxiety is that it makes us deprioritise our self-care - which includes self-compassion and boundary work - as it's never viewed with the urgency you've experienced. Anxiety can make us lose sight of what's important in our drive to "get things done". Yet those things may not be the most helpful to us. As always, the community is here for you, zeloyo; reach out when you need to.

Thank you so much for the link, much appreciated. It is definitely not easy but I think I’m making progress in recognizing my patterns, just gotta learn to manage it and restrain myself!

@zeloyo you're right zeloyo, it's never easy to do, but being able to see the patterns and attempt to 'head them off at the pass' is fantastic progress.

I do…I am in situation now where I’m supposed to live in with my boyfriend by June 30th. He was supposed to modify his home to accommodate me and my daughter. He hasn’t done anything. I feel such anxiety and feel the need to make a decision on whether I continue in this relationship or not. He often abandons me to deal with my feelings alone.

I’m sorry you’re going through this, it’s definitely frustrating to feel abandoned when you need support. I can understand why you’re anxious, seeing he’s not taking any actions when the deadline is approaching. Sending you warm hugs

I do think it’s GAD because it’s constant and ever present. I’ve been to therapy for it but my therapist really wanted me to leave meds as a last resort. I can’t afford to see her again for now but I’m applying the tips and coping mechanisms that she’s given me. Also, free resources on youtube seems to help.

I’m glad you’re able to manage your anxiety! That is wonderful news and I hope I can get to where you are now. Sending you positive vibes!
