Anxiety is Exhausting, some tips for friendly humans
Anxiety is exhausting because your body treats uncertainty like danger.
That’s not weakness. It’s your nervous system trying too hard to protect you.
One thing that actually helps, based on how the brain works:
Stop arguing with anxious thoughts for a minute.
The more you try to force thoughts away (“calm down”, “stop thinking”), the more attention your brain gives them. Anxiety feeds on resistance and monitoring.
Instead, try this:
1. Name what is happening
“Okay, my nervous system is activated right now.”
2. Ground yourself physically
Feel your feet on the floor. Relax your jaw. Exhale slowly for longer than you inhale.
3. Reduce the brain’s “danger scanning”
Look around and name:
- 5 things you can see
- 4 things you can feel
- 3 things you can hear
This sounds simple, but it works because you’re shifting brain activity away from threat prediction and back into the present environment.
And one important thing:
Anxiety creates urgency.
But not every feeling needs immediate solving.
Sometimes the goal is not to “eliminate anxiety”.
Sometimes the goal is simply:
“I can feel this and still be safe.”
Small steps count. Your nervous system learns through repetition, not pressure. 🤍
