Homesick

I’m a college freshman and my parents just left me at college yesterday. I’m really close to them (especially my mom) and have been having really bad separation anxiety. I had a panic attack yesterday at a school event and had to leave just to go see my parents (I have a few anxiety disorders; one being panic). My mom helped comfort and encouraged me to do a therapy drop in appt which helped for a few hours until my parents left. No one else is like this at my school (my roommate, floor mates) so I feel alone and embarrassed for crying all day. I’ve never felt this lonely in my life and just want to go home. I don’t have any friends yet since all my floor mates are rude partiers and my roommate really just ignores me when I’m crying. I literally can’t stop crying and can’t sleep well at all anymore. I live over 10 hours from home so I can’t go home on the weekend. Does anyone else feel this way or have felt this way?

@frankMaple2587 It’s okay to miss them and to cry and to feel scared. You’re not weak for feeling this way. Starting college is a super big change and it makes sense that you feel lonely and out of place right now. There are many people who felt this way, including me.

Even though it doesn’t feel like it this won’t last forever. It feels like it will last forever more in that age. But remember that you’ll meet people who understand you and care about you.

For now little things can help calling or video chatting your parents listening to music you love, writing down your thoughts or doing something small that makes you feel safe.

You’re doing the best you can and over time it will get easier. You’re not alone in this it is important to remember that all the time.
