I think it's very worthwhile to evaluate the other person's ability to understand and appreciate what you have to say. Of course, unless one is a mind reader, there's always a possibility of being wrong about that person or group's ability to appreciate what you're saying.
I get being shy. I am too. In fact, I’m a pretty extreme introvert. Amazingly, a lot of prominent media personalities are natural introverts, but have managed to transcend what might be considered limits on how outgoing they can be.
As far as stepping outside of your comfort zone, one approach might be “progressive desensitization.” In other words, start out by taking tiny steps outside of it, perhaps by really short encounters, or involving one or two people at first. I took speech and public speaking, and it helped. However, I still get butterflies in my stomach when I get before a group. Regardless of that, I still feel I gained more confidence from the experience. It’s also often said, that a person who seems a bit nervous in front of a group is more likely to get a positive response from the group than one who’s exuding swaggering confidence. It’s as though the audience is “pulling for” a speaker who’s a bit tentative.
There’s the occasionally posted meme, “what others think of me is none of my business.” I think the implicit message is, it’s okay to be authentically who we are, and it’s up to those around us to understand, appreciate and make the best of it, or to be judgmental knuckleheads about it. The opinions of knuckleheads don’t merit our distress. Being around them can be irritating, but they don’t have the right to compel you to change who you are.
If you bring positivism into the world, there will always be some who stare and judge. Consider what brings about the best outcome. Is it better to let some people look at you like they’re *** on lemons while you continue to be nurturing, or should such behavior induce you to abandon the will of your heart?
An interesting phenomenon is when a person acts totally unaffected by their “critics,” and by doing so, those critics are dis-empowered and often end up admiring the person who shunned their negativity. Think of some media personality who dresses poorly and has messed up hair, but they behave with confidence and the audience loves it.
There may always be a twinge of anxiety when stepping out of the comfort zone, but even that feeling becomes familiar enough to not be limiting.
I’d bet my life that the more your authenticity shines through, the more you’ll be loved and appreciated. Even the critics will have a hard time dissing you.
I’m so glad you’re here and willing to share love. That is the ultimate purpose of life!
Thanks for your inspiration!
