Atychiphobia
Atychiphobia - Fear of Failure
Normal amount of doubt and uncertainty is completely natural and is present in the majority of people, however there are those who suffer with the constant extreme fear of failure. It goes far deeper then just being worried about doing poorly on a test or getting in trouble.
Some may develop this fear as they have a lack of confidence in their abilities, where as others have extreme fear of failure due to the riducule they may receive for failing.
Causes:
Atychiophobia is often linked to a traumatic or embarrassing event in one's past, or strict/demanding parents, or demeaning siblings or friends. Minor failures when one is young can cause severe embarrassement or redicule and that can manifest into something much bigger as the years go on.
For me this phobia can be debilitating. It stops me from doing may things for the fear that I will do them wrong, and get made fun of for them. When I have to be judged/marked or critised I get severe abdominal pain, my anxiety levels go threw the roof and I physically shake until I know that what I did was correct.
Does anyone else have this phobia? If so, what are your experiences with it?
