Does anyone else have this problem? (+ Really frustrated)

October 4th, 2016

Sorry in advance; this one's a bit (very) long.

So, even though I was officially diagnosed with an anxiety disorder about a year so, sometimes I just wonder if I'm going mad or making things up. On my better days, I wonder if I even have anxiety at all. Whether I'm just overreacting. Even though I can see myself getting worse, and even though I'm in a quite dark place, I still keep doubting the thing that's making my life hell in the first place.

The doctors aren't helping; for my university to give me help, I need to get a form filled out from my doctor. When I gave it him, he didn't even seem to try with it - even when I told him a few of my worst symptoms, the things that are really scaring me, he just looked me straight in the eye and dismissed it.

I'm really frustrated that nobody seems to be willing to help me, just because I'm not having panic attacks every day and because some of my days are better than other ones. I feel invalidated because no professional seems to take me seriously just because I'm not really bad every day. I'm not sure what to do - I'm doubting everything at this point, even my own anxiety.

Has anyone else ever had this doubt about their disorder? Or trouble getting help? Anything would be useful right now.

TL;DR - Anxiety is making me doubt that I even have anxiety in the first place, doctors aren't doing anything to help me, really annoyed with everything right now. Advice/any similar experiences would be helpful.

Hello I am very sorry what has happened to you by the doctor I have myself seen doctors that are useless and it makes you wonder how they got to be a doctor in the first place I'm the same I got mild anxiety and I also to have good and bad and very bad days myself I've had a major panic attack last year I turned blue in the face and couldn't breath I saw this doctor looked at me and says I'm fine it was a asthma attack here's a puffer I'm like excuse me its a panic attack cause I'm known to getting them but like your doctor you saw this one also ignored me and told me other wise I know the difference between a panic attack and asthma attack I had a panic attack but doctors think they know it all half of them have to look on the Internet to just find out what's wrong with you everyone has there good days bad days and horrible days everyone is different and everyone gets different symptoms to others you think doctors would know have you tried looking for a different doctor cause I did and it worked out well I hope all the best and good luck okay :)

Hey @Sentead,

You're definitely not alone. I come out of every panic attack feeling like I was being extremely dramatic and that it was so unnecessary, and I used to dismiss anxiety as just me overthinking things. It didn't help that my friends around me would also agree with me. It took a long time to call it for what it is - anxiety and panic attacks - and now there's still a little voice at the back of my head that tells me I'm going crazy from my own drama. What helps is talking to someone who you know will validate your experiences. For me it was talking to friends who I knew had anxiety and mental illness, and calling helplines just to be able to talk to someone who's trained at handling crises. That was when I was told I might have a panic disorder. Now I'm working towards getting myself therapy and getting better.
