Feeling stuck
I am an undergraduate in my earlier 20s, but because of how my culture is I am not financially independent (I make some money atm but that's not nearly enough to survive) and in my case it means that I am completely under the control of my parents. I go to university in a different city so I am not usually at home. But because of the pandemic situation I have been stuck.at home for the last year. There is no quarantine in my area but my parents won't let me go out alone at all (am not asking to go out to parties or anything, just things like going to a lunch with my boyfriend who I haven't seen in months). They give covid-19 as a reasons, but they go out and they even let my brother go out. When they go out to family funtions they take me too but that's it. And their reasons for why it's okay for me them to out but not me is frankly stupid (not to be rude, but its the best way I can describe it). I am feeling incredibly stuck because I haven't been out for the longest time (going with my parents don't count because they are always over my shoulder controlling me). I am depressed and anxious and can do nothing (and this is hurting my education). My parents don't understand any of this and feel they are right to keep me in this prison. There are times when I feel like the only way out of this is by ending my life.
I am so sorry you're going through this. I myself have experienced similar circumstances. Within my culture it is normal for parents to control every aspect of their kids' lives while they live under their roof no matter how old I am. My friends from other cultural backgrounds would be surprised how much control my parents had over my life my ENTIRE 20s. They'd always say things like "but you're 28!" It would also frustrate me how there were double standards when it came to restrictions. My brothers are younger than me and they never had a curfew. I, on the other hand, always had a curfew. None of my boyfriends were allowed upstairs, but my brothers could take their girlfriends upstairs. Never understood that. However, I hope you can find comfort in knowing this will not last forever. One day you will move out and find your freedom. I'm sure you're overwhelmed to be feeling like the only way out is to end your life. That's very black and white thinking when in reality life is full of gray areas. Please do not make a permanent decision based on temporary feelings. Eventually you'll be able to move out and your parents won't have such extreme control over your life. Please hang in there. I'm here if you'd like to converse some more.
I hear you and you are not alone! I hear you when you say that you feel stuck! It won’t be like this forever! Things always are changing! Please don’t take your life! You matter and have so much to offer! If you ever need or want to talk please don’t hesitate to message me! I am here for you!
I know how you feel parents are way more overprotective of girls than boys . Guys can do whatever they want and girls can’t do much. I’m a girl and have a brother so I know how u feel and it’s annoying. Just like you I’m in school and I experienced feeling alone and being trapped in the house since the pandemic . Sometimes you wanna go out and just get a breath of fresh air. You’re not alone ❤️. Hang in there, you got this! Trouble doesn’t last always.
