I feel stuck in my small town

I live in a very small town. The population is about 5,000. You have to drive half an hour just to get groceries. You can't go anywhere without bumping into someone you went to high school with. High school sucked so you can imagine why I hate this. I'm doing university online because not only are there no good schools around here, but the schools that are here are filled with people I went to high school with. I have terrible anxiety and I live with my parents and I don't have a job because of I hate the thought of working as a cashier and have to talk to all of the people from high school every single day. My parents have inisted that there is abolutely no way were moving because they love it here. We inherited a lot of land here from my grandparents and I think my parents dont want to give that up.

I've been to a therapist before but my parents took me out because they "didn't see any benefit". Not that they cared to ever ask how it went. I want to go back to therapy but I don't have the kind of relationship with my parents that I would be comfortable asking to go back.

If I could do anything, I would move far, far away from here and never look back but my parent arent too keen on that. Any advice would be great.

I was in your exact same position, I mean, the exact same until I convined my mom to stay in FL with me, (We live in PA and in Florida, for 6 months a year each.) No good schools, so I was homeschooled. (still am) My brother and father just left today to go back to PA, my brother is a freshman up there. In that god awful hick town.

The best advise I can give?

wait it out. If your parents don't really give a damn about your feelings of getting out of there, Sadly minors cant do jack. Wait it out, stay cyber schooled, when your old enough, move out.

I actualy can relate to youre story, because i come from a small town too. i wish i could say there is an easy fix to this buttere is none.Youre parents enjoy their life there and i have doubts they feel like uprooting for you. on one hand, they have what they have and starting over somewhere else after a certain age is a little scary f u feel comfortable where you are,and on the other if you lived a quiet life u may not like a big noisy city. for me it sorted itself outbecause i went off for studies and made a life for myself there, and never came back, perhaps the plans you make for youreself will take you away too?

I really loved all the responses you got to your post.

I just wanted to ask three things,

1)when did this anxiety start?

2)What self-care treatment plan did your therapist suggest?

3) What things could you do to increase connections in your life, without having to speak too much? so you are in the company of people, to get used to them around you, but what sorts of things could you be doing? where could you be, so that you know people will not want to speak to others much.

Two things to deal with the self-conscious thoughts are; everyone in the room is probably thinking what others think of them, so they maybe nervous too, try just sitting in a room with cousins or neighbours and have a book in your hand to hide into when the thoughts set in, deep breathing and not fighting the anxiety will really help, and just let it pass.
