I just got diagnosed with GAD

Very recently I got diagnosed with GAD and it has turned me upside down completely. It has been a very strange thing, to hear after a lots and lots of years of feeling like life is an endlesa source of threats and worry, that it is an actual illness. So many times I have almost fitted other diagnoses but not quite, it always made me feel like I was just an incomplete version of another problem, I almost had panic anxiety (not intese enough but all the time instead), I was almost depressed (depression was incosistent and a respons to worrysom thoughts so it varied wildely) I almost had ADHD but missed some basic criterias. And BAM! Here is a disease I never heard of that I tick every box and it feels just like me when I read about others who have it. It is a strange feeling. Finally I know that I am not just a worried person that is crazy in how much they worry, but that I have something other people have too. That has guidelines for treatment and research behind it

But now I can not tell myself that I "just get upset sometimes" and to push it down and try to "be normal" because I know that it makes GAD worse. Now I have to take treatment and change, and ask for peoples understanding when I can no longer act like normal and push things down, I have to say: actually, I have a condition I need to treat or I will never feel calm no matter what I do so I can not push things down. This part scares me, I think people will not understand and leave me.

@SoConstantly I completely understand where you are coming from. I was diagnosed years ago. It's all a matter of coping minute to minute.

@honestWheel60

Thank you! I am really trying to just accept it and take things as they come. How has it been for you since you got diagnosed? I dont know anyone who has GAD so I am very curious to learn what the yourney, treatment and experience is like for others who has it. :)

@SoConstantly

What type of treatment are you doing? I've had GAD for years and take medication as needed, but I am the one who decides when. It's a delicate balance and it's been on and off for 30 years. Couseling was helpful years ago, but I never found the right person and then was too anxious to not see the person I was seeing. Nothing ever got solved with her, I just vented and then feelings passed.

How do they treat it these days?
