i've been having nightmares almost every night now and i struggle getting any kind of sleep. From dreams of being chased by a demon or me committing self harm to being lost in a large forest all alone. Its never been good. I remember years now i've stopped having dreams completely, and as a child i used to have a very active imagination and would dream almost every night. Now all i have are nightmares. some so real i cant tell if it's real life or not.

I am sorry to hear you have been having these terrible nightmares that stop you from having a proper sleep. Is there anything specific that started them? Nightmares might be triggered by stress or other events and sometimes dealing with that can help with having them less often at least. If you do not know why are you having them at all, then there are also some meditation techniques that might help (I would try Safe Place Imagery).

It’s a scary thing when your mind turns against you like that, but it will pass!

Try reading something nice before bed to get in the right mindframe. And be careful about the type of entertainment you consume (no movies, series, games, books with violent content). Maybe even avoid the news for a while, since there is so much negative stuff in there.

The mind at night is processing things you have been in contact with lately and things you might be scared about.

If you are on medication, check with your doctor, because some medicine like antidepressants for example can cause vivid dreams. I speak from experience.. when I started to take antidepressants the doctor mentioned to me that they might cause self harm thoughts (a very very rare side effect) and the next few days, for the first time in my life, I dreamt about self harm.. I guess because the doctor mentioned it, but it was really scary. It did pass away after a while.

But if you have these thought outside of your dreams, please get help! And if it gets worse or lasts for too long, get help then as well. There are things doctors can help you with!

Take care of yourself and know that you are not alone!

I hope you sleep well!
