Social anxiety and work

Hi

I'm new here and still getting used to how the site works.

Just wondered if anyone has any tips to share on dealing with anxiety at work?

I have problems staying in work as I get so overwhelmed by my anxiety and my mind just runs wild. I have this constant feeling that I don't fit in, people don't want me around, I'm boring and that I'm causing a really bad atmosphere wherever I go.

I started a new job last week after having 3 months off. I started CBT counselling but had to go back on the waiting list for evening appointments, so didn't really have chance to talk through coping strategies with my counsellor before I started the job.

The thing is I think I probably try and come across as confident and hide exactly what I'm feeling to overcompensate for being a complete mess. I have no idea how I come across and think I'm this scary, serious, intense, crazy person surprise

I've got this terrible feeling that I need to run away because I'll never fit in anywhere and I need to try and wrestle with it before I act on it.

I suppose I'd appreciate others viewpoints on this or if others have ever felt something similar. I'd just like to learn to be able to cope a bit better and maybe try and let down my guard a bit.

Thanks for listening.

@calmCake478 I get you! I actually joined this site after experiencing intense anxiety with starting a new job after working a few different ones.

For me, it was this above all: give it time. If there are particular signs that are making you uneasy then certainly don't dismiss them, but also recognize that it may be a matter of adjusting. You may need some time to "fit in" and for you to get to know your co-workers, the place, the job, your new routine, etc. It's also probably a good idea to check in with your boss/supervisor if you don't already have any sort of scheduled set of meetings to keep in touch and keep the lines of communication open.

If you're up for it: you may want to go to a happy hour or join your co-workers for lunch or something like that so you can get to know them in a slightly different scenario. I *really* don't care for these things but my office had a team lunch a couple of weeks ago and it was super casual where we decided on a place, got our food and then returned back to the office to chat and relax for an hour. I like them but also acknowledge that I'm still adjusting quite a bit.

Hope these help! Be gentle with yourself, acknowledge that you'll make mistakes and give yourself time. And congrats on your new job. :)

@ReadBooksDrinkTea Thank you for your reply and the tips. They make a lot of sense.

My Manager has been supportive and told me I can talk to her any time. I suppose you think to yourself that you should be able to manage things on your own. I just had a major wobble on Friday. Probably due to being tired and not feeling on par and my thoughts spiralled.

How long have you been in your new role now? I hope you're enjoying it and it sounds like you're doing all the right things to settle in.

Take care smiley
