Work Anxiety

Good morning. I have terrible work anxiety including nightmares about it at night. It sucks because I'm in charge of paying 400+ people and there's a lot of room for error when I'm the only person

@paattym1

Wow that sounds like you have a lot of pressure. I would be anxious too. Are there any procedures in place to check for errors? How long have you been working there?

@2wheelsdown I've been working there for a little over a year and a half but only been doing payroll since July. Unfortunately, unless I work from home without pay, I don't have much time to verify my work. Sometimes depending on the week, I do. But the problem, besides lacking the confidence of doing a good job, is that I'm always being interrupted or distracted by my coworkers when they have a payroll question since I'm the only payroll person :(

@paattym1

I understand what you're saying. I work in an entirely different field, but I have some similarities in that I am the only one who does my job, have a tremendous backlog and no time to verify the information I am documenting. It's incredibly stressful.

@paattym1 It sounds like you have a very challenging postion at your work and that you can often feel overwhelmed. Try utilizing some mindfulness techniques - deep breathing with long exhales, go for a walk during your lunch break, get up and walk about the room or do some stretches, listen to your favorite music or calming music and focus on your breathing. I would also try to find a time prior to going to bed to practice some calming techniques. Self-care and mindfulness is an important factor on maintaining anxiety and it can actually eliminate it all together with proper training. I hope that your day is better today and that you were able to find some peace in your sleep last night.

@HillaryLMFTi thank you so much! Starting today, I'll definitely try some relaxation before sleep. To be honest, I don't do that enough.

Hello, I just joined so Iam pretty new. Iam the shyest person I've ever known an I decided that I wanted to try and stop being shy so I applied for a job did the interview even tho I was so shy somehow I got it, I work tomorrow I'm terrified it's a busy coffee shop and I have no idea how Iam going to do it. I literally find myself shaking when I start to think about it and have a 24-7 anxiety feeling in my chest i don't know why I'm shy I hate being lonely but then when Iam in a social setting I want nothing more then to be alone. I'm to proud to have anyone know I'm shy and I act brave so my face turning red is probably the only give away. I just feel so uncomfortable when I'm at work everything's confusing I feel like I'm be hind and don't know how to do anything I'm just wondering whether or not I'll get use to this and it'll become fun or not?

@Lilyroku It sounds like you may benefit from talking to someone 1 on 1. I along with several other therapists are available 24/7 to talk to you about your anxiety and how to overcome the feelings/emotions that you are dealing with. Anxiety, especially social anxiety can be very overwhelming and if you let it, it can take over your life. If you are finding that you are spending more time worrying, feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or are even having panic attacks, I recommend that you see someone to help you work through this as it is altering your everyday life. On the hopeful side, this is something that you can overcome and learning the tools to do so will also make your life happier and easier.

@Lilyroku I'm glad to read that you went to your interview and got the job. Congratulations! That's a great first step towards the right direction. I know it sounds overwhelming, and different things work for different people, but maybe it you look at it as "I'm good for this job. Out of all the people, they chose ME. I'm going to take this opportunity to also benefit myself from it. I'll take one day at the time and try to come out of my shell. It's ok if I need to take one step backwards to take 2 forward" I'm sure you'll do a terrific job. Good luck!

@paattym1 I also have terrible work anxiety. I teach at an alternative school for troubled kids, which I've been doing for 8 years now. I'm so burnt out it's not even funny. Every day I go to work with a pit of dread in my stomach. I honestly don't know what to do about it.
