Hey, so I just recently discovered a book I really like and I think it would actually make a pretty good lecture for class. It's just that I don't know if we're even going to read a book this year and I also don't know how to ask my teacher about this.

You could possible ask your teacher privately. If that isn't comfortable for you, you could possibly email your teacher. Good luck.
