Defeated
Hey all, I had s really big work meeting that is 6 hours long today and its been giving me bad anxiety for a long time so I was dreading going to it. I lied to my boss in a really bad way to get out of it. My mom saw my texts on her iPad and now shes upset with me and doesnt understand anxiety fully and I dont know how to tell her why I didnt go. And Im having a hard time because I lied to my boss and my mom is so dissapointed with me. What do I do?

Hi dragon,
a dragon with anxiety - there's a new Disney movie in there, surely.
Well, it's really difficult to see how you can come back intact from this, TBH. In my bad old days I think I would have stayed under the duvet until it all went away, and suffered even more anxiety as a result. But you need to do something if you value your job and your self-respect.
Here's what would happen in an ideal world.
You would write to your boss explaining that from time to time you suffer from crippling anxiety, and one of the things that is especially bad for you is work meetings, especially (I'm guessing) where you are expecting you might have to speak. You should grovel and apologise to your boss for getting out of the meeting, but say that you really love your job and respect your boss, and are determined to work extra hard to make up for the things that you can't do, and that you hope that will be good enough.
Bosses will not, cannot, put up with dishonesty, but will often make allowances for a good employee who does the rest of their job well.
