Finding a job while beinh terrified of everything
Finally graduated and the only issue is finding what I might be doing for the rest of my life.
I've always been called as the shy member in every friend group. To be honest, I'm not really shy but my anxiety is always off the roof. So, my actions and way of talking makes me look like I'd rather be somewhere else and talking to someone else more interesting.
Does anyone have any advice on how to fight the feeling of the ground swallowing you whenever a stranger/new person talks to you? 'Cause networking is a must in my chosen career but also people lie a lot and that stress adds to my anxiety. How do you talk to people without wanting to run and hide yourself in your safe space?
It's tough. I've actually been declined a job for fast food. The manager said it would be too stressful for me.
Hi dear. Networking and forcing yourself to talk to strangers can be very stressful! I want you to know this is a completely normal thing especially if you are an introvert. When I do something like that, I always tell myself that this will be over soon and at the end of the day I will be in my safe comfort zone again ( which is in my room). I tell myself this is only temporary and the work day will soon be over with.
Like you I consider myself somewhat shy and anxious and after some time knowing people, I become more talkative. Which is absolutely normal because not a lot of people become overly talkative to strangers they just met either. So when you network or meet new people or co-workers, start with a little steps like for example common courtesy, greetings, professional work-related questions, for example. And as time goes on you will get to know each individual more personally like their work ethic or their personality. And then you can see which individual or groups of people matches with you more.
I understand that when you meet new people, people might not always be who they seem or who they say they are. So at first I would just keep it very common and professional until you get to know them better.
the first step is always the hardest! Sounds like you are doing just fine. Hang on and it will eventually pass. Some beautiful opportunities like lifetime friends were once mere strangers as well. Best of luck to you sweetheart. :)
