am I being irrational?
okay so I know a good method to calm down over something is to ask yourself if youre thinking clearly or if your brain is running away with anxiety. but I really can't tell here or maybe I'm too upset to
so I live on a where masks are required and everyone does so without issue. no big deal. but today on my way to class I completely forgot to put a mask on and walked pretty far before I realized. people were looking at me funny, but since I have social problems already I always think people look st me funny and convinced myself that it was just my anxiety that made me think people were glaring at me.
so obviously that was super embarassing, right? and that would've been bad enough but I would've gotten over it eventually. but where it's really messing with my head is that I have been here a month and a half now and have made no friends. I haven't talked to anyone. so now everyone that I passed has the first impression of me as the guy who wasn't being safe. I know it sounds childish but my school takes covid precautions very very seriously and I'm afraid people are going to remember and I don't want them to assume I'm one of those anti-mask people or that I don't care. And because of that I can't tell if I'm overreacting or not.
could somebody help me on this? I'm so scared I gave the 20 or so people I walked by a very bad impression of myself and I feel really upset by it even though it was a small event
Sometimes I forget my mask, too! I explained to someone that I forgot to grab one, and they offered one to me. Maybe it takes a little vulnerability to explain to someone face to face why you didn't have a mask, and takes a risk to see if someone has an extra one and be kind enough to share. That may be how it is with making friends: risk and vulneralbility.
Hey..It's totally okay! I sometimes forget my mask too..It's not your fault at all, cos we are all not used to this new situation..Don't worry..Just be careful next time and dont think so much about what others might be thinking..We all make mistakes and that's what makes us humans..and I'm sure you will make friends soon! It all happens in good time:) I was pretty shy too growing up, but I put myself out there, introduced myself to others and tried to learn more about human relations...Trust me, it gets better over time..All u need is practice and patiece! All my love and strength to u!🧡
I have social problems too. My area also requires masks and sometimes I almost forget to take mine with me even after I've been doing this mask thing for awhile. Everyone has so much to worry about nowadays they'll likely forget this in short order especially as you continue wearing your mask. It's understandable that you're experiencing stress and worry. Adjusting to a new place and this whole new situation with masks is hard on anyone. So, don't beat yourself up for worrying. In saying that, I realize it's hard because I've struggled with being irritated with myself for worrying. I've also struggled to make friends. A month and a half isn't that much time to adjust to so much. Please try to give yourself credit for any attempt to be friendly or kind. It also helps me to join small groups to get to know people like hobby groups or meetup groups or faith based groups or support groups where people are spending more time talking to one another rather than concentrating on work.
