struggling to make friends, scared to seek help
Decided to go to college 12 hours away from my home and everyone I love during the height of the pandemic. Just finished my second year, and ending to about a year and a half of miserable isolation. I haven’t made any friends, even my roommate kept me at a distance. I know that people generally enjoy their college years, therefore, I know something is off since it’s been hell on earth for me. I’m not the quiet person sitting in the back of the class. The problem is I’ve lost any semblance of self-confidence that I’ve used in the past to buffer awkward conversations. I feel like a “loser”, and I definitely feel like an imposter within society. Even my friends from home have commented on how socially isolated I’ve been which makes me a bit afraid that they’re going to think I’m too broken to fix or be friends with. I no longer understand how friends are made. I no longer enjoy being a member of society because I can’t seem to be a functional one. I just wish I had a friend, someone I could talk to. My parents likely think I’m “crazy” so they recommended I seek counseling. It scares me a bit because I don’t want to be diagnosed with something or prescribed medication to dull me out. I just want my confidence back. And after already begging every divine being above for a friend, I’m in desperate need of tips on making conversation/friends. I swear I’m not a horrible person, although, it become harder to believe that as I spend most of my time alone with myself.
