Mother of son on the ASD

Hello! I am the mother of a 23 year old son that is on the ASD. He was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome when he was 18 months old and started school when he was 2 years old. He had a teacher that came to the house twice a week to help be able to communicate. They taught me and him simple sign language so that he could tell me what he wanted. It helped with alot of the screaming that he was doing. He started going to school at the age of 3. He did so well learning but still had trouble communicating. He was still using sign language as he wasnt able to talk yet. He also wasnt potty trained yet. He did finally get potty trained at age 4 and he began speaking at the age of 4 as well. However he wasn't behind in learning. When he started kindergarten. They wanted to put him in a special ed program that he would be seperated from the other students. I told them absolutely not. He was not being treated any different and was not being isolated from the other students because the special ed program they didnt teach the children like they did the other children. They taught them slowly and my son was way to smart and he would be held back and not be able to flourish. They put him in regular classes but his IEP had him going to a class once a week for special ed and he was in speech therapy everyday. Jump to high school. He was so smart. He started taking college classes when he was a sophomore. He continued taking college course and graduated high school with 24 college credits and graduated with honors. He decided he didnt want to go to college yet so he is working. He is still struggling with social issues. He really tries but still doesnt have friends. He is such a smart and talented young man. Eventually he will find the perfect young lady for him and get married. Until then he will continue to work and save money for his future. Thanks for listening to a proud mother.
