Advice on supporting someone with bipolar disorder

I'm unfortunately not sure if my significant other was diagnosed as type 1 or type 2, but I have been doing some reading and am learning that some of the ways I was trying to help might not have actually been helpful. Does anyone have any tips for helping someone through an episode? Specifically, a depressive episode where they want to avoid talking to anyone and sleep a lot? (Just FYI self harm is not a concern here at this time.)

I’ve been with somebody who has bipolar 1. I’ve struggled immensely in figuring out how to be myself and help the way I feel baturallr drawn to do to understanding how to help when the illness strikes. My natural tendencies to talk and can sole do not work often and more than half the time land me in a duel with my significant other. It’s hard to love someone one day and be ignored or dismissed as if you’re presence bothers them the next day. When people push me away I seek to get closer creating a loop that’s not helpful for either person but it’s all I know. My partner is very hostile and aggressive towards me when I do this and I still don’t know how to handle it. It’s very painful.

As someone with BP1, I can say that manic-depressive cycles need a differentiated approach. If they don't want to eat or talk, but self-harm isn't a problem, maybe just start by leaving a glass of water with them (without added encouragement). If/when your partner feels better, have a discussion with them about a relapse plan and ways that your partner specifically can feel seen, heard, and cared for during a cycle. I think manic-depressive people with strong self-awareness are capable of receiving help and shifting their moods (with support), just finding the right place to start can be challenging.

Thank you for this. I really like the part where you mention a plan to feel hears seen and loved during the down cycle.
