Bipolar and my marriage

I have had a *** of a time with my symptoms for the last six or so months. The manic episodes are manageable for the most part, the depression is killing me. This has begun to affect my marriage in the form of me manifesting as uncaring, detached, and loss of any empathy. I was medicated earlier this year but the side effects (LATUDA & LAMICTAL) were worse than the bipolar. How have any of you managed the symptoms in a way that manifests the way that it needs to for your partner?

I very much relate to this. Just recently my wife told me “It’s like you’re in your own little world.” She has also said things like, “You don’t care,” or “Do you even love me?” As much as these things hurt, I have to keep in mind that she doesn’t understand what bipolar depression looks like or that in manifests differently for different people. It looks like uncaring when really our partners are asking for something outside our very capacity at that time. I can’t generate something that doesn’t exist. I’ve also been told I generally lack enthusiasm. Still, I will not be made to feel guilty about something I have no control over. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. The right partner will educate themself and communicate in a way that’s more helpful than harmful.

Thank you for putting words to this. Sending you love and peace. ✨💕✨
