I don’t know what to do
Hello everyone. I am a teen and my boyfriend of almost 2 years’ mom is in what i think is psychosis. She thinks my boyfriend and his brother have been replaced and aren’t the same kids they were. Last time she had an episode she slept with a knife and called my boyfriend the devil. She cries randomly because of what they did to Jesus. i don’t want it to be too late or for her to hurt him. She thinks people are hacking her and watching her through her phone, or that a fly is a drone.

I grew up with a bipolar, schizophrenic, BPD, narcissistic mom. At times, her behavior was relatively normal, but even then, if you asked her, she’d tell you that the devil was talking to her and causing random things to occur around the house. Sadly, up till at least the age of 9, I was convinced that she was telling 100% the truth, including the extent to which I deserved all manner of abuse. Although she reported that the devil was talking to her, she also said she was the "voice of God."
You mentioned that she has “episodes,” which suggests that at times, she may be more receptive to receiving mental health services during those times of reduced psychotic symptoms. In my mom’s case, the delusions were always present, and she never thought of herself as anything other than perfectly sane, but was terrified by the possibility of a professional mental health evaluation. I suspect she believed if she could “act sane” for as long as it was critically necessary in order to avoid a court ordered evaluation, she was sane enough.
My mom’s sister (my aunt) was also schizophrenic, but was a far more gentle soul, and was open to mental health services. As a result, her symptoms were managed well enough that she and her family had a decent quality of life.
Evaluations and mental health services can’t be forced unless a person is a very clear and present danger to themselves or others. That’s why people like my mom virtually never get the help they need.
The question is, what can your boyfriend do? It depends on his options. For example, can he live with another relative, or even on his own? If he’s under 18, it’s kinda complicated unless mom just gives him permission to leave. When I was 14, I went to the police station and asked to be placed in foster care. My mom wouldn’t allow it, so I was forced to go back home. That was before cell phones and credit cards, so when I left at age 15, I was untraceable.
Is he safe at home? Can he lock his bedroom door? Is there another family member that can advocate for him?
He is fortunate to have you for support. Besides being there for him, I doubt if you can do much to help, but that support can make all the difference.
She needs to get on antipsychotic meds asap. That’s how a close family of mine was.
