Hello,

I recently started seeing a psychiatrist about 5 months ago and was diagnosed with bipolar 2. Prior to that I have always been treated for generalized anxiety disorder. Anxiety has always been something I have struggled with and can easily identify. Depression is something I struggle with also but it is hard for me to identify vs my "normal self" if that makes sense. Well three weeks ago I was prescribed lamotrigine, then just started taking a higher dose last week. Since taking it my depression has been awful. Work is a complete struggle currently as I have no motivation. I have had a few days of feeling great but not many at all. I was hoping to see how others experience have been when first starting lamotrigine. How long did it take before you felt better!?!

Thanks!!!

In terms of how long it will take for you to feel better, there is a lot of variation. For some people, it’s a matter of weeks; for others, it can take a couple of months to feel the full benefit. It’s key to stay connected with your doctor and update them on your experience, especially if things are becoming hard to manage.

Hii, lamotrigine normally have their full efect about 6 weeks since you started taking them.

I'm also bipolar 2 and the first med I was prescribed was lamotrigine. It kinda work for me at the beginning, it reduced my episodes and the intensity of them but i still have them so my psychiatrist put me on a higher dose (300 mg) and I feelt so horrible, I was really depressed and so tired so they give me lithium and reduce the lamotrigine (100 mg). Since then I've been so much better, I haven't had and episode in months.

I had seen many people who had really good experiences with lamotrigine but it wasn't my case. Everyone reacts different to the medication so if it's not working maybe you and your psychiatrist should consider other options. Finding meds that works for you is a hard process and it takes a while but it's worth it.

If you have more questions just ask me!!
