Midlife Burnout, starting over
Why do companies claim to care about their employees while literally paying them the legally required minimum?
I've found myself starting over. My situation is not as bad as most, as I have a stable place of my own to live, but I've found myself applying for literally any and every job because after a year of unemployment and thousands of job applications to anything paying a livable wage, I still have found anything. So I'm borderline desperate to have some cash flow, a purpose, and genuinely something to do because not working is draining me.
I had a retail job offer today after a 5 minute interview. Minimum wage. I have a degree and literally decades of upper management experience in retail and restaurants.
I am lucky enough to be in a situation that I could scrape by on minimum wage. But how is that the economy we are in? Again, I realize I'm lucky enough to be in the position that I could survive off minimum wage, but this is absurd that at my age I'm starting over literally to less than I made 25 years ago (I made over minimum wage at 16 years old).
I'm at the point I need the job, so I'm taking it, but how is this the world we live in?

I am often perplexed at the job seeking differences. Some areas or places seem to not have any and others seem to not have people that fit into jobs that are out there.
I can only speak for my area but many of the employers with better jobs that pay more tend to use placement agencies. (research the agencies some are better than others). Most job seekers do not like the idea of being a contract employee or are not in financial shape to give it a try.
Many places I have found use this as a rent before you hire type situation. They can weed out people in a probationary time frame. Easier to tell agency a person is not a good fit then to have to fire and hire again.
It can be helpful in both ways as staff on contracts at places can see the culture and workplace to see if they could see themselves working long term at a specific employer.
