PLEASE Give Advice.
I am a Jobcorps Student. I am the president, a dorm leader, a leader in my trade, a firefighter, and here soon next month I'll be going to work for the Forest Service. My problem is that I don't know when enough is enough. Everyone around me always tell me I'm doing great. But if you really know me you see that I'm struggling to keep going. I get up at 6 and work from 7am to 8pm. That leaves an hour for myself and my friends. Then it's lights out at 9:30pm. I want people to be proud of me. To respect me and my ambitions. The only way it seems anyone can is if I do way more than what is necessary or normal and never stop regardless of who or what needs me. Showering is hard. Brushing my teeth is a chore. My partner is upset with me because I don't want to listen to their advice and help myself or at least let them help me. I'm hardworking and hard headed. Please point me in the right direction.
@EyeYhWh369 Awww, it's so good to see young people taking advantage of what job corps has to offer. I'm a former job corps alumni and my job corps experience was the best in my life. It saddens me that you feel like you have to do so much to the point where you are neglecting basic self care. Please take the time to stop, rest, and reset if you need to.
I don't know you, but I know that your best is enough. You are a leader. You can't lead if you are are not in the correct mental space and state to do so. Everything you are learning and doing is great and all. It's important, but most important is you... never forget this! You do for others and do this and that, so now you need to do for yourself.
I get it-- you have responsibilities to do but you can't neglect yourself. Please talk to someone. Someone should be there for you and be understanding.
As for your leadership roles and positions you hold, why? Are you just doing it to get enough hours for graduation? Not sure how it is now, but when I went we needed 360 work based volunteer hours to graduate. If so, how many hours do you have now? Are you able to step back from some roles so you have more time in the day to care for self? You're going to get burnout real fast real quick. You can only keep things up like this for so long and it's not worth it if you're physical health is neglected and your mental health is not in a good space. Again, you are important! Treat yourself like you are.
Job corps is a time to flourish, learn, and grow. Or at least I wish it was this way for all our young people. ❤️ I really wish you all the best in your life! Please take care of yourself and know you are doing an amazing job.
