Traumatic Experience at Work

Hello, I’ve been dealing with something that happened at my call center job. I work for the Ohio Medicaid Consumer Hotline. I did all that I could and was professional and tried to be as helpful as I can be during this call, and the lady on the other end said that I was making her suicidal and she said some graphic things. I’ve been so scared to go back to work for fear of that happening to me again. How do I cope with this and move on?

Oh, friend you do your job. Probably one of the best on this planet. That woman is a manipulator, avoid getting to this trap, just go by - it's the best way. You may pray and forgive her, then you will get stronger 100%

I understand how frightened you feel. If I may, there's a possibility that the lady in question is going through some mental stress and may need some help. Have you tried reaching out to anyone at work concerning this? You are doing well and you will be fine 💪

I told my supervisor about the call, and she said to not take it personally

As someone who works in a similar field. I completely understand being scared to go back. That call was honestly traumatic for you as you were receiving such intense negativity. Them saying those things would make anyone terrified to pick up the phone again. You seem like you have a good heart and was only trying to help and do your job.

Sometimes realizing that people say things from a place of hurt and that it is not anything you did can help. It is not your fault they feel that way and it sounds like they just wanted someone to put some of their pain on to help relieve them. But because of their actions you’re dealing with the weight of that conversation and it’s affecting you pretty deeply. But realizing it is not on you or your fault in anyway can be a first step.

Coping with this can include things like distractions or honestly just a way for you to decompress and let go of the tension. Think of some ways in the past you’ve been able to destress and breathe. Tell yourself you’re allowed to feel this way and that you’re allowed to let it go. You got this and that’s a hard job position to be in. Always remember you are only trying to help others. Some people truly hurt others because they don’t know what to do with their emotions and that is not on you. Talking with someone can help a lot as well in letting out the emotions you feel.
