Perfectionism as a new employee

Hi all,

I recently started a new career, in a new company, in a new industry, in a new country. Rationally I recognize that any one these single changes would be difficult on a person, but I can’t escape feeling like a failure at the end of each work day.

Learning so much so quickly has been overwhelming which has compounded my self-doubt. I cried last week when my boss and I held our one month check in - something I’ve never done before and still shame myself for. I was honest and shared how overwhelmed I had been. In return, my boss was receptive but stated that the workload would only increase in this role and I may be better suited elsewhere.

We will meet again next week but since that has happened, I have felt self doubt constantly in the background of my life, like a puppy biting on my ankles. I hope that makes sense.

I really struggle with being authentic in the workplace and am as self identified people pleaser. I pride myself on my professionalism and feel comfort in the control associated with this.

It’s been exhausting and I really am looking for some immediate relief just to get back to my normal self- especially so I can show up more rational to our next chat.

Any ideas?

As a new career and industry, is this something that you're wanting to do? Any new career will take time to adjust, that's why there's usually that 3-month probation period. Is this the kind of career you'll enjoy in the long-term? It's good that your boss was receptive, and gave you a heads-up that your workload would only increase. Do you think that based on your interest in this career, that you'll be able to handle a heavier workload? Or do you think your boss is right about changing a different position?

How were things when you worked in your normal-self pace? What are some skills or management ideas that you could bring over to your current tasks? Any new career, different industry will be a challenge at first. Getting used to how things are run, the expectations will be different, all these will take time. Evaluate your work, and then see if this is the kind of career that you will excel in, and can deal with the stresses of having a heavy workload~

It's been a week pass. I hope everything went well with your last chat with your boss.

I just want to remind you that you got this job! Assuming you went through the process of interviews and got this job, your boss certainly see something in you. It's a lot of pressures going into something new with all the new circumstances, and it's definitely not easy.

But you got this. Remind your boss what you're capable of. Remind Yourself what you're capable of. Tell your boss what's struggling you the most now, and what can have help to better improve your performance. If your boss is really going to ask you to leave, you have nothing to lose anyway.

Take your pride in again for the last chat. Show your boss what you Do know about the job. Be the professional You again. Show your boss how you could have done more if you are your normal professional self .

You took a big chance and a lot of courage for so many changes in your life. You got this. Remember what a courageous and professional person you are.

Put up your best clothes, the best look, and take a very good look into the mirror of yourself. Every morning before you go to work. Don't forget who you are. Just because the circumstances are different, You are YOU!

The Best version of it, YOU! You got this! Don't doubt it! Belive it!

YOU GOT THIS.
