Lately, the only travels I make are with the company I do volunteer work for, so I don't have to take that many precautions in my preparations. But in general, I always make sure I learn some basic phrases of the native language of the place I'm going to. For example, "Help" and "Fire" are the phrases I need to know at least. People are naturally programmed to look when they hear the phrase "Fire", so if there's a threatening situation, shouting "Fire!" will grab people's attention. Tends to work better than just "Help".

Also knowing the emergency number of the country you're going to is a must. Most networks are programmed that if you dial 9-1-1, 1-1-2 or 9-9-9 your call goes through anyways, so this doesn't seem that important. However, some countries have different numbers for police, fire department and ambulance rather than one general number. Knowing those numbers might save time which is extra important if you try to make yourself clear in a language you don't understand that well.

Last, but not least, save the number of your country's state department in your phone with the address of the closest embassy. Should any trouble arise, you know who you can reach.
