I could not end black history month without recognizing and celebrating the Founder and Father of Black History Month Carter G. Woodson Ph.D.

Here are some fast facts about Carter G. Woodson Ph.D.:

1) Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875 – April 3, 1950) was an American historian, author, journalist, and the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History

2) He was the second African-American to earn a doctorate from Harvard.

In 1912, Woodson became only the second black person to earn the prestigious degree, following in the footsteps of W.E.B. DuBois. He studied history at the university.

3) He’s known to have started the lasting celebration and remembrance of black history during February.

Woodson chose February to honor the birth months of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln Lincoln. The program would later expand to become Black History Month.
