Although he jailed for protesting segregation, arrested and jailed for living his life as an openly gay man. He continued to fight economic and social equality. Talking about intersectionality is so important as race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression are interwoven and important part of who we are.
As we honor African Americans during Black History Month it is important to recognize that all of our identities are important to recognize and discuss as we all work to make this world a better place. I hope today and everyday you are inspired to talk to your peers about the importance of celebrating diversity.

The 'March' graphic novel by Andrew Aydin and John Lewis is a good read about March on Washington, similar marches, lunch counter sit-ins, peaceful protests and the path John Lewis took meeting others in the movement.
