Embracing Diversity
A) Definition:
Diversity is the range of human differences, including but not limited to race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, social class, physical ability or attributes, religious or ethical values system, national origin, and political beliefs.
B) The Beauty of Diversity:
The human race is extraordinarily diverse in so many ways. Gender, ethnicity, race, class, religion, nationality, sexuality, philosophy and lifestyle. The areas in which we differ are endless. Nonetheless, at a basic level, we are all of the human species. Each one of us experiences highs, lows in life, strive to be happy, and fulfilled. Our common pains and joys bring us together, but our diversity makes us unique.
C) Reasons to embrace Diversity:
1) You will learn new things and make better decisions: Everyone you encounter can teach you something new. When we ask the right questions to others out of curiosity, we can learn a lot of new information.
2) You will be more progressive as an individual: Due to the Internet and ease of travel, our world is becoming an increasingly smaller and cohesive unit. Our global diaspora is filled with a population of individuals with complex layers and textures to their cultural identity (Cultural identity is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's self-conception and self-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture.) By becoming more sensitive to these shifts, we stay on trend with the development of our global culture.
3) You will make the world a better place: When you demonstrate more understanding and tolerance towards others, you are contributing positively towards the collective consciousness. We need individuals to spread the word and serve as role models to younger generations, so that we can promote peaceful and harmonious relationships between our communities.
D) How do we strive for understanding and fully embrace diversity?
a) Self-Awareness:
Individuals must become aware of their own values, biases and stereotypes. By understanding themselves, one can increase their levels of comfort with individuals who differ in values.
b) Empathy:
When you meet anyone from a different background, try to place yourself in his or her shoes, and understand everything that has made them who they are before you treat them unfairly.
c) Show compassion:
Perform random acts of kindness for all types of people. Some examples include:
i) Sincerely complimenting another person.
ii) Holding the door for someone.
iii) Listening intently.
iv) Offering a homeless person your leftovers bag from the restaurant.

@Tazzie I don't know about the leftover bag though because it might be better to offer to buy them some food or give them a bit of money to buy food. I remember once I had some food with me, they weren't leftovers and I haven't bitten into the food. It was brand new untouched food, when I offered it to a homeless person he said he didn't want it.
I am thinking that some homeless people might get offended about being offered food (it is worth a try though because not everyone is the same), especially if it is leftover food from the restaurant.
@Tazzie
Thank you for sharing. This is so important and applicable right now! Polyculturalism is also something of interest that indicates that our ethnicities are inextricably intertwined due to colonialism and world connectivity
