Re-learning Spanish and Learning Portuguese (Brazilian)
Hey all!
So I studied Spanish for three years in high school waaaaaaaay back in the day and actually became somewhat fluent. Unfortunately, I did not keep studying, and lost (or at least forgot, haha) what I had learned and had initially retained so well.
On the other hand, through a dating app, I had the opportunity to make the acquaintance of a girl from Brazil who speaks only little English. At first, I thought that learning Portuguese would be just like Spanish, on a one-to-one ratio. And while I found that there are some commonalities between the two, Portuguese (particularly its grammar and structure) has been immensely challenging for me to navigate so far.
Have any of you ever tried picking language back up while simultaneously trying to learn a new one as well?

Hi Sunset! I also took Spanish in high school and I am currently also learning Portuguese because honestly, I'm bored and I like using the Duolingo app! It's fun to keep up my streak and my best friend is Brazilian so I like to tell her what I have been learning. I think knowing Spanish has helped me understand Portuguese better, but it definitely has its differences. Good luck learning!

Thank you for your reply! I have heard good thing about the Duolingo app, so I may have to check it out.
And you mentioned something else that I thought was really important; being able to share our progress with friends who speak the language that we are actively trying to learn.

Something similar happened to me.
My first language is Spanish, so I studied English at school, but after a while I had forgotten many things and my level was terrible, but I also wanted to learn Italian, so what I did was watch series and listen to music in English. while learning Italian grammar, which helped me a lot.
Although everyone has their own way of learning, we can all do it.

That is great way to learn! I honestly had not thought of that. With as much as I love music, I can see how learning a language through that medium would continue to contribute to my immersion.
