What was/is your second language?

Hey all,

Just figured this would be fun question to ask here to spur discussion.

So aside from the language we learn during our development, many of us have also acquired a second (or more) language.

For me, living in Texas when I did, my second language was and still is Spanish. Regrettably, although I used to be rather fluent in it, I did not keep studying. As such, I feel like I either lost a lot of what I learned, or that the language itself is locked away in my brain somewhere. And I just have to dig it out, haha.

So yeah, what was/is the second language you all picked up in your lives?

my first language is english, but my grandfather immigrated from Italy, so i’ve been picking up Italian because my dad speaks english and Italian and i thought it would be super cool to learn it and talk to him with it.

That's really cool!!

I feel like you're really getting in touch with your own roots and family history by doing that. :)

I try my best! it’s easier for my dad to speak italian, more natural, and i don’t see him every day so it’s been a few months and i feel like i might be able to have a simple conversation with him easily when i see him soon!

@sereneSunset26

Hello! I am Canadian so my first language is English, then around a year and a half ago I moved to Portugal, and now my second language is Portuguese. It was stressful at the time to learn because it was a huge change all of a sudden, I went from never knowing the Portuguese language to not being allowed to speak English in school. That was a lot on my mental health, so I switched over to an English school once I was basically fluent in Portuguese. It is still a hard language for me, but I am building onto my knowledge and can easily keep a conversation (in real life) but am way better at writing in Portuguese. If you happen to know anyone who is interested in learning/speaking with me, I would be happy to interact on this platform with them! Have a great week, lovely's :)

I bolded the parts that are definitely relevant to me. I am not surprised at all that switching schools and not being able to speak English would be heavy on your mental health.

With me with Spanish, I also write it much better than I speak.

That's amazing; you're definitely multilingual!

What's your favorite language out of all those? :)

@sereneSunset26

Well, I love Persian more than any other one (since that's my mother tongue) and then I love English (A LOT). I love Arabic the least, even though it's easier than French!

What about you? :)

@sereneSunset26

The language I studied in college was Latin. I can read it and translate ;however, cannot speak it very well.

@Baileyjoe2011

Wow!!

I still find that really impressive; I've always liked how Latin phonetically sounds when it is spoken out loud.
