The term art is only a label
Throughout the years, there have been a lot of attempts to classify what it is and what it isn't. But art isn't really about that; it's about the meaning you take from it and your own experience with it. Everyone reacts to art differently and can grow and learn from it in their own way.

To me art is what you enjoy, so music, cool pictures and great books are what I enjoy most.

I think the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" absolutely applies to art. What I think is gorgeous may seem like trash to someone else and vice versa, that is the amazing thing about art it means different things to different people.
3. What could, under no circumstances, be art?
There are no limits on what is considered art in my opinion.

I completely agree with the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" and I just love the diversity that comes with art. I feel the same about appreciating art that we do not really like. I do not like Picasso neither, however, I understand how important his contribution was. I think it is very important to acknowledge that the specific pieces of art were created with a purpose and maybe we are just unable to see it, whereas someone else might be touched - as you said, it is very subjective and that is okay.

I am a very musical person, so the art of music plays a large part in my life.

I think that art should have some sort of message to be conveyed but it doesn't always have to be beautiful, because art can be a very important part of change.
3. What could, under no circumstances, be art?
I don't know if there are any constraints to art, and what can be art, except for maybe actions?

Your remark that art can be a crucial part of change is very important. Another thing is that we cannot separate art from the social context. Before I did not like dadaism but now I learned how to appreciate it by acknowledging its value.

1. What role does art play in your life? I am currently training to become an art therapist and have been painting / dabbling in ceramics for most of my adult life.
2. It is sometimes claimed that art must send some form of a message to the viewer. What is your opinion? Should the message always be "beautiful"? I think art does send a message to everyone who makes / views etc it. This message could be as simple as "I don't get it" but it is still a reaction. Art does not always need to be beautiful. Most art is not meant to be that way.

Being an art therapist sounds like a great occupation! Are you also going to focus on painting/dabbling in ceramics there? When reading your reply, it also comes to my mind that imperfection is beautiful and there is a high value to hand-made items that are not perfect but this is what makes them so unique. I like how your dad always focuses on what he likes instead of otherwise. Perhaps in everything, we can also find a piece that we appreciate if we are attentive.

The other day I had a friend over, the first time since the pandemic and lockdowns. The first thing they commented on was 'wow you have a lot of paintings everywhere!' I looked around and thought that actually yes they were absolutely right and I hadn't realised how much I had created 😂 So I guess right now art is a pretty big part of my life!

No, beautiful is as so many here have said, in the eye of the beholder. Some art is just shouting "I am here look at me!", other times it can make people look away, cry or smile.

Hmm I do shudder at some of the more modern 'art' pieces, lol and I'm planning to visit a modern art gallery to see if I can 'see' what the artist was trying to achieve.

You had created all the paintings that you have at home? How much time do you spend painting or creating something? It is a great idea to go to visit an art gallery! Do you think you might like some pieces of art more if they were explained to you?
- What role does art play in your life? Ok I have always loved art drawing and painting. Art and music were my favorite classes in school ..I played the violin in 4th grade and until high school where I had to learn french horn. I had some of my art in elementary school go to art museum on display kinda was cool .. I love art .

It seems like you are not only enjoying the music but also good at making it! It is really great that you can play both violin and the French Horn. I think it is quite unique, it must be difficult to learn it.
I agree with you about abstract art. Before I did not like it much, but it is really beautiful that everyone sees/feels something else when looking at it, for everyone it has a different meaning and that diversity is much more interesting than looking at a painting of a landscape (even though I love those as well!).
I have never heard of that artist painting with blood, this is a very controversial example. Now it reminded me of a pig that paints. What is your opinion on this? Can something like this be art for you?

Absolutely 💯% I have seen a 🐎 paint 🎨 and it's really interesting and good. So why not a 🐖 ? I think some people just can't be open to the idea that art can be anything made from anything by people and yes even animals. They are to close minded and set in their way of looking at things to really see others and art for what it is self expression .. going from violin to French horn wasn't so difficult other than getting used to playing with opposite hand the hand I held a bow so once I started I got used to it.. having braces though sucked 😒 made it difficult to position my lips correctly . Glad when those were taken off.
