My thoughts on meaning in art

I just want to somehow start a discussion on meaning. Idk if this is a worthy topic for the arts n’ crafts forum, but it is art related. I suspect this topic would be totally ignored on other forums because it’s about art.

I heard someone say a few days ago that meaning is required for creativity to exist, but that is not what I have found. There are many visual artists out there that are very creative yet even go so far as to despise the concept of meaning, and rightfully so. If meaning is what you desire, then you’ll end up never making anything. The world around us is more proficient at stripping meaning away, than providing it. The best art seems to me, to avoid any real meaning. Meaning actually stifles creativity. Consider religious art. It’s the same thing over and over again. Meaning actually renders it meaningless. It’s like a band having to play the same song so many times that they actually forgot what the original meaning was. That’s why when you ask rock stars about the meaning of their songs, they don’t know.

So if not meaning, then what? What fuels your creativity?
