2025
HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!!!!!! 🎆🥂🎁❤️
Prayers and prayers. May this year be bigger, brighter and blissful. May we all be safe, and happier.
Amen.
I am so, so sorry that I missed posting on your birthday. Yesterday was a pretty catastrophic day for me with so many ups and downs that I ended up with a panic attack and decided that I needed to take a night off. Today has been a bit better but I am still exhausted.
So let me start by answering your message here and then I will go back and try to answer the website question if I have time okay? I will get to those hospitality ones which may hold solid promise.
Marketing is more hands-on than theory, but of course for a small business you have to understand lots of things including planning, accounting, etc. So in marketing you usually do a few business classes to get the flavor of how to run a business but it is very much about how you present information to convince people.
I am glad that you are working so hard to get yourself in the right mindset. You are right not to rush things. You are indeed building brick by brick. Twice a week sessions are awesome! You are slowly going to get more confident. That is good enough. You will resume as soon as you can. That is good enough too. But do open the books that you have daily. Read a single page. Therapists usually argue for slow exposure therapy to the things that we fear. You are indeed getting up. I have full confidence that you can do it.
I am indeed hoping and praying for you this week and every week. I hope that you had a good birthday!
I will be back to try to do the 2nd message tonight after I finish two more than I need to look at.
Ok, I am going to attempt to do the first hospitality one here - the one for hospitality administration.
The first thing that I like about it is the high employability score. They are looking to get you a job which is what you need. I also like the idea of eco-hospitality as I think that might be a growing field.
It looks like you do need to take an English placement exam, but based upon how you write here I don't think that will be a problem. It looks like the first year of the program is nice and broad with lots of really hands-on activity based learning. I also like the cross cultural studies and the fact that you get to learn a language. Year 2 explores lots of different fields once again while starting you on some field training. You will get a nice idea of the things that you like and what you don't. I also like the independent projects that you are possibly doing. Year 2 and Year 3 have nice electives to choose from.
You are getting some nice management training throughout and it looks like there are even some people that start their own businesses within the hospitality industry.
I will have to compare this program tomorrow to one of the other ones, but the only challenge that I see thus far is that you end up being prepared to really be leading organizations. But the process looks quite complete and easy to follow.
Okay. You know Dawn, I feel like this decade is turning out to be the worst for me. First covid, educational gaps, I'm still required to give A-levels. If I start university at 25-26, I'll graduate by 29 and I'll feel like my whole 20s have been lost to just completing education.
And a new pressure is created - My father was telling me last night how he had the thought just last night that after my A-levels, we should select a country where we 3 can go together and settle but you know what? Recently I have been obsessed with this Fashion Communication course that seems to be available at low cost only in Malaysia. And he wants to settle in a European country.
Try to stop thinking about how long things will take or what age you will be. None of that makes a difference if you think of life as a journey. There are no set beginning and ending points for any activity except birth and death. Lots of regrets just get your thoughts looping around themselves. This is very much one of those radical acceptance things.
I agree that all careers are stressful. Yesterday I wrote 80 emails for instance. I think that you handle things when they come at you and try not to worry too far into the future either. If fashion communication is what is calling to you then go with what that voice is telling you. Listening to your inner voice of hope and the future is critical at this point.
If your dad wants to go elsewhere after you finish your A levels then he can go by himself or with your mother. You should go to Malaysia and study what you want to study. One of the critical things here is that you get away from him at all costs. You need your independence in order to grow. It is scary, but you can do it. Escaping him stops the abuse. It is why your sister left. It will allow you to find yourself and happiness. It is the most critical element of studying for the A levels.
Ok so the difference between the two hospitality tracks is that the 2nd one is more intense. I don't think that I would go for that one if I were you. There are more opportunities and earlier opportunities for outside learning and you spend more time learning French, but I do not think that you would feel a need to be in upper management or director of something.
I still have one more program to look at tomorrow, but right now I like the fashion communication one followed by the first of the two hospitality ones. You need to make sure that you keep at least two options open because you can never be sure what is going to happen.
80 mails is huge Dawn...
I have no idea what career is in store for me but Dawn, I need to make sure it aligns with my European aspirations. I do want to settle in Europe and I want a career that will have jobs there. IT is highly in demand there but I don't have the brains for it. If I study that fashion course, I think to get a job in Europe, I'll have to be in one of the fashion cities and I have to consider the living costs which are expensive. I have also kept hospitality management option open. All these thoughts bug my mind. Feel free to suggest me things. Actually after you are done seeing the links, I may ask you a couple of questions regarding my career like which would be best to study in undergrad which in masters.
Actually, my mom and dad can't survive alone in Europe. The thing is, my dad wants to stay with me till his death and I don't see that as any problem. I know I have been abused by him, and even my mom to a certain extent but I can never abandon them. I'm glad my sister could get away from this toxicity but what she is doing now is inhumane, childish and selfish. She has taken the concept of Western boundaries to another level. While boundaries are necessary, it's important to know when, where and how to exercise them correctly otherwise you end up making things worse and come off as self-centered. She has abandoned me at my worst and no matter what my parents did, they are still being the one trying to hold my back. You can say maybe bevause they have no option or anything but they are still doing it while my sister didn't even wish me on my birthday and isn't doing anything for me. I'll always remember that. I can stay 3 years away from my parents for study and grow independent if that's what's needed. But if they choose to come with me, that is for something later. I'll also study where I'll find my suitable course and not be forced by them to go somewhere but I also want to settle with them in Europe in future (even if it is after my undergraduation) but yeah by learning how to not take the stress they sometimes give and anyway them getting old can't make them more abusive. Maybe you will find me stupid, Dawn but my friend once said that I have too much compassion and love and good wishes for even the people who hurt me and that it is my strength and it's probably the case here. I still pray my parents have a long, healthy life. Again, stupid sensitive me, I guess. But I try to also think from their perspective because they are also traumatised human beings who had a hard life (none of that justifies their abusive nature) and don't have access to therapy.
PS: Like you told me to talk to my teachers, I have got one of my teacher's (who helped me in my Igcses) appointment for the day after tomorrow because I need some guidance. Let's see what he suggests. I hope it doesn't backfire and I don't get a scolding or something traumatic. Can you suggest me what to say to him. Like my father says his own version but I feel like being completely honest with my teacher about how my dad hung me up in 2024 and made no concrete decision which is why I had a loss of a year and I also want to tell him about my foundation plans and how their being scrapped off broke me and that I'm dealing with depression. Do you think I should tell him everything? Because my father stigmatises mental health problems and doesn't want it to be out and doesn't let me talk. How should I handle the situation?
Ok, I am going to need to keep things a little shorter tonight because it has been a rougher one on my end.
I am going to focus on two things: 1) Your plan for keeping with your parents is just fine. As I said, listening to your heart is what is most important. It is quite admirable actually that you still love them in that way and want to support them. That's a good thing and you have the strength to make that work. I think that in Europe your parents will be a bit overwhelmed and need you more because everything is so new and different. That means they will recognize what value you provide in just loving them as they are, deep flaws and all. But for now you should focus just on the A-levels and after that university. All of it is a step at a time.
2) I think that you don't need to tell your former teacher everything. You can say that your dad kept promising other things and delayed so much that you waited on the A-levels but are now ready to take them on. Then ask him advice on how to give yourself more confidence in starting up again with studies after a break. Depression itself is somewhat stigmatized and I only mention my own illness to people I have been close to a while. You just can't be sure how people will react and you don't deserve to end up in the hole again because the former teacher is insensitive. But you are say the same thing by asking for how to increase your confidence without admitting everything.
I will try to go back and look at your message again tomorrow for things I missed answering and get to that final hospitality program. @querencia798
You are okay and I am still able to answer some. I am hoping to find out tomorrow if the job I have had for 25 years is going to be cut or not. So my next few days are a little dicier but I will find my way back to better footing.
It is okay to fear even a few days of being more alone as your friend mourns. I think that you will find that she is still there for you and it can really help you to comfort her. So it is less about giving her space and more about asking how she is doing and really listening to her responses. One thing that has really helped me with 7 Cups is doing what I am doing right now - typing messages to others that I should be saying to myself. Knowing that you are helping someone really improves your own mood and confidence.
You will pick up more friends. It is a skill you can build at any age. And you don't need huge numbers of them. There is no set number of friends that suddenly means you are a success. 7 Cups is a great place to practice the friends thing. So when you feel lonely consider doing a chat room or starting a new discussion thread or answering someone else to try to start a discussion.
Ok, I looked over the final hospitality program. This was easily the most challenging of the three hospitality programs. It includes lots of independent projects and a dissertation and may have additional entry requirements. I would avoid this one.
So the order of the ones that I liked are the fashion communication one, the first hospitality one, and then probably one of the mass communication ones.
Hopefully that helps.
Dawn, you have to immediately let me know about what happened to your job tomorrow. Because only then I will narrate you what a disastrous day it has been today. There's a lot of pain. I went to meet my teacher. But it's gonna be a long message. But again, since you have your problem going on, I cannot put too much on you. My friend is mourning so I can't disturb her either. But I have to tell it to someone. And I pray everything works out well for you and you can make it better. Morning, afternoon, night, whenever it is - please let me know about your job. And whether are you gonna be in the mindset to listen. Please. Looking forward to your reply.
I did find out that I do have a contract for next year. But they made me wait until after 6 pm to find out so it was a long depressing day. I ended up canceling the class that I was supposed to teach at 5:30 pm because I knew I wasn't in the right head space. I told my dean point blank why I was doing it for mental health reasons. She is usually pretty understanding about such things because she knows that I will do anything she asks of me normally. Everyone wants me to be really happy immediately, but my brain needs time to process the competing anger and joy emotions. So I will play "fake it until you make it" tomorrow. It usually works.
So I look forward to hearing about your meeting tomorrow. Remember that anything your former teacher said is advice you can choose to take or ignore. It will work out no matter what. There is a very slight chance that I won't be able to get your message tomorrow, but I will do it first if I have a moment to get on and I am going to try hard. I have a late rehearsal tomorrow night.
I'm so happy you got a good news! Congratulations.
So about the meeting, I was completely honest with the teacher. Told him how I know I was supposed to start A-levels in 2024 but to lessen my educational gap, I wanted to go for one year foundation programs offered in Malaysia instead of doing two year A-levels. That I proposed the same thing to my dad. That he kept me waiting, kept on delaying, stayed in his hometown for most of the time, eventually promised to send me abroad and even gave it in writing but in January told me that foundations have no future and A-levels are the path for me. He listened to everything patiently. You won't believe Dawn what he told to my father next - "At this point it's true that completing A-levels is tough so it's better if you send her abroad" This triggered an anger inside me. Both at the teacher and my father. Because that was my core wish I had been denied and hearing the same thing from an experienced teacher made me sad because I cannot have that despite my father hearing it from him, I realised it. But after my father said that he cannot afford it right now (the lame reason because he doesn't want to spend it, to be more accurate), the teacher understood and said that since I have no alternative path, I should do A-levels.
Then coming to the subject selection, the confidence and the way with which he said that Business and Economics are not my subjects scarred me to death. He suggested a weird combination of English Language, English Literature and Psychology which seems like a suicide. Hardest subjects that demands so much writing when Business and Economics' writing are scareing me to death now. Because I said I wanna study fashion. But he didn't really hear it that it is not fashion design I want to study but fashion communication which does involve marketing and things like that. He told me I can decide it later.
I even let him know that I want to study this fashion course in Malaysia and he was asking why am I aiming for Malaysia and not Europe. It is suitable course for me, affordable (in comparison to if I study it in the UK). Is it my fault? He started belittling Malaysia how it's meh when it comes to education. That none of his students went there. That Malaysia used to catch fish earlier and now they have developed a little. I forgot to tell him that the course is in collab with a UK university. But still, is it my fault that the course I want to study is in Malaysia? Does everybody go to Europe at the first start? Even tho yes I do want to settle in Europe but not at the cost of studying what I don't like. Fashion courses are extremely expensive in Europe and it's fashion DESIGN courses that are available there and not fashion COMMUNICATION because that's what attracts me and not design bevause I don't have good design skills. Whatever few fashion communication and marketing courses they have in Europe are expensive and have so many requirements that I don't want to pressurise my father for. Then suddenly my father started telling the teacher how he will be willing to spend 16000-20000 euros per year and that confused me. I was disturbed.
We ended the conversation with my teacher telling us to visit again and talk more slowly. By the end I was left triggered by the fact that he himself admitted that A-levels are now tough, confused about my subject selection, angry at my father that he wouldn't even listen to the teacher's advise in the beginning of the conversation of sending me to foundation.
We hired a rickshaw (a kind of transport vehicle here) to return home. We got into an arguement and he started roughly telling me things how I have him now and that why am I bringing up foundation again and that life isn't easy abroad and all of that was making me so angry, I jumped down from the riding vehicle and fell down and hit my knee. It gave my dad trauma and when I reached home, because of my mental illness or whatever, along with the overload of my teacher's information and words, I started getting hyper and got so hyper that I started searching for knives. Was sobbing and falling down here and there. Banged my head onto the table. Slit the side of my hand with a broken glass bevause I was feeling so much pain. I don't know what you could say, Dawn but it was ugly. I couldn't contain the pain and fear. It was all coming out. My father also couldn't control me and in rage, he also said hurtful things like giving me to a mental hospital. But by the end we all 3 were crying because of what self harm I did and how I was behaving and yes....that's how the day passed by. Another trauma on my body and mind and soul. I don't know what I should do, Dawn. What pathetic stage of life I have gotten stuck in. Feel free to think and then comment on everything my teacher said and suggest me something. I need guidance, Dawn. And I'm extremely terribly sorry for putting so much load on you. This is not me. I don't know what takes over me. What mental illness I have. Sitting in complete agony right now with a cut on my hand, swollen forehead and swollen knee, THIS IS NOT ME. THIS WAS NOT ME. Please help me. Make me see if there's something I'm not seeing. Shake me and say things that I may need to hear. Help me... Help me.... I cannot do without guidance. I'm crying desperately as I type this.
Ok, take some nice deep breaths as you read. It is still all going to be okay despite the bad day that you had. It was indeed traumatic and your brain still doesn't deal with trauma well. Yes, the self harm and everything else was scary and rough, but you are right - it isn't you. Bad moments don't define you. Ever. It is how you work hard to overcome them that matters. You are going to do that if you keep on the path of lots of therapy appointments and medication and starting A-level preparation.
The day was very painful for you, but (I know you aren't going to believe this) I think it was helpful for your dad. He needed to see that your original path was actually a good and recommended one and that someone else thought so. He needed to see the pain that all of this has caused you. Your respected teacher saw right through your father's weak excuses. I know that you think your dad is a pretty horrible person, but all people feel guilt. He may not react well when he feels guilty but that doesn't mean the emotion doesn't happen. Every so often that means he will be kinder to you. I doubt that he will suddenly say you don't have to do A-levels, but any kindness that he offers you deserve. Remember that over the next few days.
Now listen to me carefully about the subjects for A-levels. I have said more than once that you have excellent English skills and that I have always sensed you would be more comfortable studying it that business or economics. I have told you so in previous posts. Psychology also isn't a bad course for someone who wants to study fashion communication either. To do fashion communication you have to be able to communicate in English. Psychology helps you to imagine what people are going to be impressed by and how you can communicate fashion trends in a way that people adapt them.
Am I now telling you to switch? Not necessarily. What about combining? What if you studied business and English (and psychology if you need a third one). I would go with English language rather than English literature. Going for something that you are actually good at rather than totally new material will make things easier for you. The key is to get through the A-levels as best you can. Business will be easier than economics.
The fact that your teacher didn't understand the fashion communication part is okay for now. I disagree with your teacher that Malaysia is necessarily a bad plan. I can easily see the program that you found working for you.
Again though, it is A-levels where you should be focusing now. You are NOT "stuck in a pathetic stage of life". You are working through painful things to come out the other side. You can do this. Stop looking at the past or the future. The present is what matters. Focus yourself on what you are going to do tomorrow and then next week.
I had the least helpful therapy session today. She told me stuff like looking into myself and that things have to come on my own. That suppose I'm drowning and I'm telling the person in front of me to hold my back while they can only hold me and not my back. Back is important but I need to be held too. She also can't advise on subjects or solutions and I feel like I'm wasting money on therapy. "Build yourself" How!
I'm very low on energy right now, Dawn. So about the English Language part, it is difficult and I'm not confident on my writing skills. Creative writing skills. Grading system is high and barely anyone gets an A. Psychology there's no good teacher for and it's content heavy and weirdly if the questions are repeated what was right in answer last year may not be right in the next. These are the complications. Now I know English is a critical part of studying humanities and creative courses and when I say I am not confident about my writing, one must wonder why I'm going into the creative fields. Then I also start doubting myself whether I'm really good at anything. Everyone is saying their own thing. Oh law? It has a low passing rate. Oh english lang? it has 1% chance of getting an A. Literature is hard. And I'm getting confused and I feel like my brain is getting eaten up. Already 4 months are gone. How am I going to finish from scratch? My initial plan was to take online coaching classes for business economics and law and only physically for mocks, hire a tutor for business and economics, and give business and econ (as) in jan 26, law in may, business and econ (a2) in jan 27. Do you think it's a good idea? Are you also against online classes?

I'm just frightened that 4 months have already gone by....
Ok, I got home really, really late tonight and don't have time to look closely this evening, but my schedule loosens beginning tomorrow and I think that I should be much better for the next week or so and will carefully look over things.
Some therapy sessions are going to be rougher than others. Remember that therapists are supposed to push you in directions that you don't want to go and sometimes the way there is rather vague. It doesn't mean that you can't figure it out.
One quick clarifying question before I start looking over subjects - all of the programs in Malaysia that you were applying for said you needed a D in A-levels, not an A. Do you have to get an A?
Okay well there is a big difference between an A and a C passing grade. Watch the benchmarks you need to hit and don't worry about not hitting higher than them.
I still believe that you can do this but you need to get started. You are allowed to be tired with low energy. But that doesn't have to stop you. I teach often and do other things often when I don't think I have the energy or mental capacity to do them. The actual trick is just starting to do them anyway. Your therapist is right in part - you are the only one who can jump the hurdle and get going. It is just lots of little steps. Opening the books and just getting started. You are not wasting any money on therapy. She can't give you an exact path. You are indeed the script writer. But the script is easy - start no matter how much fear you have and how tired you are.
I do think that you can go for the business/economics since you already are planning on them, but I do think that you should switch out law for English language. I will help you with the essay writing portion of things. You are a very good writer. You actually are good at plenty of things. The English language is going to get you much further in the career that you want than law will.
Online classes aren't as good as in person ones because you actually need to change your physical environment (which I know takes bravery) in order to get out of the hole you are in. Doing everything from home will cause you to doubt more. But if online classes are your only option, you can make them work.
So your next task is to start tomorrow on the business and economics curriculum. Spend at least a half hour to 45 minutes on each to start. You can do this. I will guide you. But you are right that the time to start is NOW. You can't know where any of the pitfalls are until you begin.
I have noticed that you don't answer if you think that you are going to disappoint me in some way. I am hoping that isn't the case here.
I am going to be pushing you a little here, yes. But first of all, I am just suggesting two 15 minute blocks to start. You can do anything for 15 minutes.
Second, if you don't succeed, you just try again the next day. No harm done. I am not going to think differently of you.
You have lots to be proud of. You are trying. That matters a great deal.
@bestVase7265 I need pushing. You aren't doing anything wrong. I love you. There's just a lot of things on my mind. That whether my unskilled father is right about giving me a base with A-levels and my stubbornness of doing a Foundation is wrong. I'm also looking into European universities to see if any programme aligns with my desire and that will make it easier for me to settle in Europe with my family. Something I should not be doing now. I should focus on the A-levels. But my heart is broken so much bevause since childhood I had imagined my 20s to be something else and now that jt's not turning out as I had planned, I'm getting broken and all my energy is going into bearing my pain. I got to start A-levels and need courage.
And about the English Language programme. There are 4 units as in 4 paper. You have to be a fast writer and if I take it, I'll have 8 months to prepare, which is less. Business and Economics writing has a format. Even tho I won't be studying law, I may take it because it has only 2 papers even tho the syllabus is huge and has exams only in May so I get one year.
Anyway, you check out the syllabus of both. Download the pdf.

@bestVase7265
I know, I know it is annoying to see me worrying about the future ignoring my present, but if you want, just let me know your thoughts about these 2 hospitality courses.
https://www.uclancyprus.ac.cy/undergraduate-course/ba-hons-hospitality-and-tourism-management/
https://university.taylors.edu.my/en/study/explore-all-programmes/hospitality-tourism-and-events/undergraduate/bachelor-of-international-hospitality-management.html#programme-overview
Ok, so you are right about needing to start studying for the A levels now. You really don't have any more time to look at what your dad did in the past or plan for these other programs in the future.
You NEED to focus on the present and that means studying for the Business/Economics today. What did you do for them in the last 24 hours? Were you have to do 15 minutes on each? This is becoming more and more critical. You will be stuck even longer in the regret if you don't start immediately.
So I am going to wait a night on looking at either the other programs or on the English/law question. I will start those as soon as you can tell me that you have started studying the business/economics. 15 minutes on each. Tell me what you looked at and what you learned. Your reward will be me answering the other questions.
I don't want to study A-levels. They are a huge pressure on me. I'm not in any mental state. My parents haven't left me in any.
@bestVase7265 My body is in survival mode. I feel suicidal. I don't like any subject.
@bestVase7265 I was so naive. Too naive. With a probably simple, romanticised life envisioned for my 20s. I can't accept it getting broken. I can't accept my reality. I can't accept joining university late. I can't accept anything. It hurts. So it hurts. They say it's my mental illness. I dunno. Don't care.
@bestVase7265 Even my therapist got overwhelmed. Said let's take a break. As if that'll do anything. Maybe I'm destructing things for myself and taking me behind. But I can't hold my back. I'm not confident even with the foundation programmes when my dad told me yesterday to see till Jan.
@bestVase7265 Last few days have been bitter. I cry bitterly and have rage episodes. My vagus nerve is strongly irritated. I have engaged in multiple self-harm. Anya is telling me that I'm not prepared to take any kind of academic load right now and I agree with her. That I need to develop better emotional regulation skills. That I cut my hand to convince my sister that I was apologetic for my misbehaviour last year. Then this year my father's rejection broke a dam in me. Until I reach a baseline first, I can't be forced to study. My body and mind aren't accepting that. Since I have options open in Malaysia anytime and I'm aiming for skills related careers, I need to hone my skills. Art and design. Graphic design. Painting. So that I don't remain criminally underprepared for university. That I need to learn to handle stress and trauma better in uni. Then maybe I can opt for a foundation course. Even yesterday seeing my miserable state my dad told me that if I fail first year or can't handle the pressure, he'll let me go abroad. This is a big risk. Trusting him. Anya told me that he seems like someone who might go back and forth and definitely can be very harsh but he also does care about me. So I don't know. Maybe I'll regret but perhaps I could also heal and reconnect to parts of me that I have lost in terms of my art and design hobbies. If you ask me why can't I do both studies and these, it's because I'm limited. At least right now. I have become more introverted. Stay-at-home kind of person. In her little virtual world. I need to fix that. When your own parents put repetitive pauses in your growing years, you lose good habits and that good lifestyle. I lost that. I know I might be closing a lot of doors on me by not doing A-levels. But I don't have it in me. I have been broken and broken so bad. I don't know. It's still a huge thing. Risk. Because what if the same thing happens then? But what if not. I don't have any answer to that. But this is what is going on in my mind right now and since you are a big support system, I thought I should let you know. My mind is still feeling very injured.
