How to motivate myself to have a career?

Hi guys,

I'm trying to make a list for myself of things that will motivate me to work hard. Usually, I have absolutely 0 interest in university or a future career. I'm naturally very smart and I've been in high-level academic programs my entire life, but I've never cared about any of it (plus I've always had chronic depression). I just do it for my family, to make them proud.

I'm wondering if there are any ideas to make myself actually want to do these things in my life. The only one I have so far is: that one scene in Legally Blonde where Elle Woods starts studying hard at Harvard. That's literally it.

Any ideas for my list?

@CherryBlossoms246

Can you do "fun" classes to motivate yourself? :)

@jesusredeemedme2425 I appreciate the idea, but I genuinely hate classes and academia overall. I hate them during every new semester. I'm good at doing the work and I have straight As, but I just don't want to be there at all.

I was in a similar position a lifetime ago. I went to university and took every “ology” that I could and nothing stuck. Graduated anyway and went back for grad school and hated it. So went to the local tech school and tried out some things there. Ended up being hired by my one of my night teachers. I later on ended up teaching classes at the same school myself. Sometimes opposite actions are the right actions. I still fight depression, but I do love my work now. It just took a long time to get there.

@Cadbadger I'm really glad you love your work! I'm on a path now to a field that I think I'll like a lot, but that level of enthusiasm is still so low. It's just higher than everything else. I still just don't want to do anything, even something that interests me.

i understand the lack of enthusiasm. It still creeps in on me too. Unfortunately that’s the depression beating on you. Depressive makes everything ten times harder. I may not know you or your situation that well, but me and depression are very well acquainted. I know it’s cliche but the struggle is real. I see a therapist, a psychiatrist, and I’m currently changing meds and it’s still hard as ***.

Keep fighting. Know that there are plenty of people on 7 Cups that care for you including me. We may not have answers, but we’ll always listen. Just a suggestion; when I get stuck I start cycling through “positive” podcasts and go walking. Sometimes it’ll spark some curiosity and down the rabbit hole I go. At the very least it’s a good distraction.
