I just needed to get this off my chest about my parents

In 2021 I decided to temporarily work for my parents’ business in order to help them out and so I could have a small income for a while. They were very disorganized, stressed, and were behind technologically at their business. I came in, built them a website, streamlined all their processes, did all their paperwork, physically reorganized the place, everything. I worked my *** off. At the same time, after work each day I had been at the library getting one certification after another to secure a better paying career outside of working at their business. Over time after I started working there, they both started coming to work less and less. They started making me handle every single thing that came across the business including their own responsibilities. They stopped doing their taxes. They stopped responding to our general contractors. They stopped talking to the other employees. They pretty much stopped doing everything. Then my stepdad took himself off payroll and started taking money from the business. This is when I really started to sh*t myself and was panic applying to jobs trying to get the *** out of there. For the past few months my stepdad let our current projects fail because he stopped responding to our GC. Then the lawsuits started coming in. I forgot to mention that this past summer he was in court for a DUI. He owes so many people money at this point. For the past week everyone’s been panicking about the state of our employment because we found out that he lied about submitting bids so we would have a project over the winter. Today I had to pry it out of him that we actually had nothing and found out we all had to file for unemployment. Everyone panicked and came running to me for help with their applications, as if this was my fault. I have been applying for jobs this entire period, and have submitted hundreds of applications. I am TRYING to get out. I’ve been trying. I finally had an interview for a small part-time job yesterday and have another one coming up, but they’re both low-paying. My stepdad hasn’t faced anyone with this news, and made me break the news to our employees and our payroll company, and still hasn’t responded to our GC. Clearly my parents hate their lives, I have no idea. Who would let their entire business fail like this? I truly don’t understand. I’m not strong enough to keep solving their problems for them, and they are making me feel so trapped. They keep implying that I can’t leave the company. They won’t take care of themselves. I truly don’t understand this kind of behavior. I can’t believe my own parents have destroyed my life to this extent, as well as their own! Also I want to mention that we have had many contractors this past summer begging us to bid their upcoming projects, so it wasn’t a lack of jobs, it was my stepdad who decided not to bid and then lie to us about it! I’m sorry that this is such a long rambling mess but I am so mentally destroyed from this horrible situation and genuinely don’t know what else to do. I don’t see a way out. I don’t see how my parents are ever going to get it together and they’re going to be a burden for the rest of my life. I just needed to scream this into the void.

@mxscn

I’m seriously praying for you to get a new job and not look back. It sounds like you can handle many things and you’re very skilled at running a business! Your parents will survive & adapt.

Hi RedWell. It’s been a year since this was posted. I wanted to let you know that I just started a new job that pays extremely well, is in a field I love, and has essentially saved me from this situation. After a week of settling in I am overwhelmed with the good that has happened to me recently after literal years of fear and hopelessness. I believe your prayers have significantly impacted my life and I wanted to thank you for being someone who took the time to read my post and lend support in one of the darkest times I’ve ever experienced. I also wanted to spread hope to you and whoever else sees this. My parents are still continuing to make poor choices to this day that affect everyone else, but somehow I’m still coming out strong. Thank you again and I hope you are doing well in life too.

I’m sick in bed today And just wanted to Tell you what a boost It was to read your message! You make me want to continue to try to help people. I’m sure that was an extremely hard Initial step, But you did it and you are doing great! It’s true, Prayers surprise sometimes. I wrote down a quote that a friend of mine said once “All of my fears end once I get started”
