I'm stuck in a limbo
Lately I've just been feeling tired overall of everything going on around me. My parents have been pressuring me to find a job since I turned 18, and my now dad is threatening to send me back to Mexico or to the US to work in the fields if I don't make an effort- despite me making an active effort :( and showing him screenshots etc to prove it.
For some background: When my depression got to a limit I sought out a psychologist to get a confirmed diagnosis and my family doctor started me on antidepressants. In all honesty it feels like the medication hasn't really kicked in (despite it being around 2 months now) because part of what is causing my depression is still going on daily. And although I know how ssri's work, I can't help but feel that way.
One of the main stressors I'm facing right now is the fact that my parents keep pushing for me to get a job- which isn't an issue as I agree with them- however, I have applied to 20 something jobs already and none of them has called back. Part of the reason I assume, is because I don't have much experience in the retail scene (being that I didn't work as a teen). Another reason I'm starting to think is because they'd rather take people with experience than train someone- despite them openly saying that they are more than happy to offer training. This is one thing.
Another thing is that other jobs that offer good pay despite not having experience (for example cleaning) often require you to have your license. Which I don't, and the thing is, I would 100% get it if it weren't for my parents. My so-called psychologist made a comment regarding the fact that I'm 18 and still passing everything through my parents (which felt pretty insensitive considering I told her that they've threatened to kick me out before over smaller discussions). I've offered to pay for lessons out of my own money I've earned from another seasonal job I had in the past, but they always refuse saying that it's not worth it. But then they won't make an effort to teach me. So I'm just stuck in this limbo.
Overall my parents have chosen to turn a blind eye to my depression and social anxiety despite having a letter from the psychologist explaining how I was showing suicidal tendencies amongst these two disorders. They just keep pushing for me to get a job and get my life together- and although I know they mean well- it's just degrading for my mental health honestly. My dad said "then lock yourself away in a psych ward" instead of "I'm sorry you feel that way" when they learned I was suicidal. Because to them I'm just being dramatic.
I'm really scared of becoming suicidal again but there's just so much pressure in my life right now. If anyone has any advice or has been through something similar please reach out. Thank you.
That sounds like a rough series of things to handle. I am so sorry that I didn't see your message until now.
I hope that things feel at least a little better today.
I would agree with you that your parents are putting too much pressure on you at the moment and are saying insensitive things. They simply don't understand how long these things (both healing from depression and job hunting) take.
If you would like to have someone in your corner, feel free to send back messages to this thread. I am really good at answering once a day (as soon as I realize that there is a thread that needs answering - so sorry I missed yours earlier). @littleWillow7261
