Hi. I'm a bit confused.  Do sad songs help or on the contrary make things worse? I read so many different articles and no one seems to agree😭 Some say it's totally fine because it resonates with ypur mood and can make your emotions feel valid. It can also make you feel less alone because you relate to the singer and the lyrics.  But some say that it has a bad effect on your mental  health and just makes you even more sad.  So when i am feeling sad i used to listen to sad songs mainly. I used to like it at first but then it actually started to affect my mood negatively and i noticed being even more sad. Then i started to force myself to listen to happy music but it was irritating me because it was so cheerful and i was feeling the complete opposite of it. I decided to cut off on music for a moment and now i wanna come back to listen to music regularly but don't really know what to do. Or maybe i should just listen to some podcasts? At least it will bring me some valuable and helpful knowledge.

@schrodingerscattt I make playlists😁 I have Amazon music. I like a bit of everything, country, 60s 70s 80s and 90s. I like some pop, indie, rock and folk. So I have a mixture of all songs. I have a playlist for waking up too, a playlist for inspiration, a playlist to unwind too, a playlist (just contains music) to leave on while I sleep. Maybe you could do a similar sort of thing. But yeah don't make a feeling sad list. At the moment all that's playing is my 8 nd a half hour long xmassssss playlis t. The most happiest meaningful songs evver. I also have a Xmas sleep music list 😁❤ so I say mix all the different songs sad and happy together ❤❤gives you a giant festive tiny hug ❤merry Christmas sweetie ❤

@schrodingerscattt I think it depends. If you just look for something to help your feelings pass it is fine. If you are in crisis and doom, it is a bad idea. How about trying out a compromise and listening to slow and melancholic songs but with hopeful lyrics and tune?

I think it's more about the direction of the sadness in the song, if it is wallowing in pity and accepting of things never getting better then it could have a negative effect. But if it is in defiance of it's own sadness (which sounds odd but when you think about it that's just another way of saying you want to feel better and improve things) then it's totally fine in my opinion. Because when your sad you will always feel initially sad, and a song like this will resonate with that while also encouraging you to change directions and feeling better at the same time so it almost has to have a net positive right? Well that's my take hahahahaha
